Modellbau-Metz in Germany very kindly sent me this photo and a description of what it would take to get the Max8 G2S to fit:

Hi,

you can use the MAX8 G2.

There are only some small modifications needful.

You need to cut a small peace from the ESC-Board for the motor.

Second you need to modify the sideguard a bit for the sensorcable.

Attached a picture.

But in my meaning you need no sonsor for a Monstertruck.

I'm not sure what you'd do with that sensor cable once it's hanging out the side of the truck though. It's nice to see that the long 4278 motor will fit.

Cutting a piece from the ESC to make the motor fit sounds a bit scary to me.

Thanks. I think I will create one.

I've got the aluminium shock caps + collars in my basket already, and I'll add the aluminium steering rack bushings (TKR5122).

According to the manual, in order to upgrade the A,B,C,D blocks, you need to purchase a lot of additional parts and the cost becomes silly. The stock parts are composite+steel so they should be sturdy.

The Tekno Ti skid plates would be very nice! Unfortunately they don't ship outside of the US. I'm sure in time M2C will make some.

4S Backflips are a no-brainer :)
That's a smart large cost saving move on Tekno's part to include the hybrid steel/composite hinge pin braces to increase durability. The same goes for the one-piece motor mount. Keeping the kit price attractive is the name of the game. 99% of monster truck owners are not going to worry about pills and a degree of this and a degree that.

The manual lists 4268 2200kv motors as being suitable, but the Hobbywing 4268 G2R is 2500kv.

If you wanted to install one in order to give the wide Max8 G2S ESC more space, how do you figure out which pinion to use?

Are there any major downsides to using the 4268 2500kv over the 4278 2200kv?

A longer "can"/motor will have more magnet area... more torque. Use the pinion guide in the manual as a guide. Gearing is so driving style, and tire choice dependent and will vary from person to person building their truck. Check motor temps as you begin testing/running/breaking in the RC platform. You do have an infrared thermometer, right?

Thanks very much! Doesn’t sound like there’s too much downside going with the smaller can but it should make it much easier to fit the ESC in.

If I do it, I need to figure out which pinion to get. I’ve ordered a 15T but it might be a bit big for 2500KV.

I suppose the composite/steel setup could be stronger, I know the “pills” from the OG setup can be broken as well, but I see the assortment of pills that came with the OG MT as a lifetime supply of them, LOL.
There’s much to like about the MT48, but I wouldn’t give up an OG MT for one.

It's here! Everything else except my 0 offset hex adaptors are here too. In theory I could drive it tomorrow. We'll see how far I get with the build today.

The debate over pinion sizes. A MT410 V1 and a MT48 2.0 have the same final gear ratio. I run a 16t on my MT410 so that's what I'll be running on the MT48.

The auto-dubbing is really good.

I watched the most important part, and he’s used a foam block and longer screws to raise the ESC in order to avoid cutting into the side guard

Typically, 4268 (42x68mm) size motors are used in 1/8th scale buggies, and 4274 (42x74mm) motors are used in 1/8th scale truggies. The increased weight of a larger platform will benefit from a larger motor. In the "bashing" world of things, all bets are off. Of course, playing with kv and voltage numbers is always something to consider when trying to determine what's best for you.

The last Pinion Gear column has me chuckling a bit... "breaking parts". :p

What kv is your motor? 2200?
Castle 1515 2200kv. I'm mounting LP Badlands to it. They're similar in size to 4s Backflips. A bit smaller. I think the gearing chart is for full size 1/8th wheels. The picture on the box shows it with 6s Backflips. If I were mounting 6s Backflips to the Princesses new ride I would probably use a 13-14t pinion.

The truck is built, I'm down to programming the ESC and making sure the wheels spin in the right direction. Its maiden voyage is scheduled for 8am tomorrow.

You can tell it's the Princesses new ride because I'm the one putting it together. Maybe she'll let me borrow it, possibly?

It's stiffly sprung, I don't think they would make a difference.
I don't run sway bars on any of my trucks so my opinion probably isn't worth much on this subject.

My son’s Rival MT10 has sway bars and it traction rolls on grass which is annoying. Will be interesting to see how the MT48 handles with its much wider track.
