Hi!

I built an HPI RS4 MT back in the late 90's as a teenager. I still have it, and it still runs. Specs below:

Chassis: RS4MT with carbon top brace - was innovative for it's time, but fragile. Likes to shred belts from debris off road, and if you look at it funny it will break something in the suspension. Spare parts are getting difficult to acquire, but I stocked up on belts a few years ago. Added front universal joints which helped the steering axles quite a bit.
Motor: Started with a 19T Trinity mod motor, now has a Traxxas Titan 12T 550.
ESC: Mtroniks Pro-digi forward only ESC. No motor limit. - Wish it had reverse. That was a mistake in hindsight.
Radio: Futaba AM 2PCKA. S3003 servo - servo is very weak with the stadium truck front tires to turn.
Battery: 3000mAH NiMH. - Lots of run time on the motors I have.

I know my car classifies as vintage/retro now for quite a while, and with its overall fragility it's never been a great off road fun truck. I'd like to tinker in this hobby again to scratch the itch, and I'm trying to decide whether I should improve some of the shortcomings on my current car (new radio, beefier servo, reversible ESC, maybe a light brushless 3200-4000kv setup), or keep it as is and try a more modern machine.

I've educated myself on modern electronics, and it's pretty obvious that propulsion has changed hugely, and cars are more robust and faster than mine is. Brushless, LiPos, and 2.4GHz radios with no stupid crystals sounds really nice.

If I do try a new machine, it would mainly before road/grass/dirt fun running. There's three tracks in my town if I wanted to try that. I was thinking along the lines 1/10th or 1/8th scale 4wd buggies or truggies, maybe a 1/8th rally car. Buggies have always had that cool factor look and lighter, and the trucks seem a little more capable when the grass gets thicker.

I started looking around and some things caught my eye:
HPI Bullet ST Flux - modern beefier version of my truck, but HPI has fallen out of favor it seems?
Kyosho Optima Mid 60th anniversary - gorgeous re-release buggy with a lot of cool factor. Looks like people build them for so-called shelf queens, but still looks like a lot of fun to drive. And cool to display when not running. I would definitely enjoy building it up. That's a significant part of the enjoyment to me.
Arrma Typhon 1/8th - Looks like a serious machine with some bash factor.

Well, there it is. Look forward to reading the replies and getting more learned up.

Welcome to RCT.

SO many choices today, but so few kits, as most come in ready to run shape these days.

I don't have much experience with HPI's or Kyosho's stuff, but there are several here who do, and they can probably help.

I have noticed there's a lot of RTR stuff now. I like to build things not only for the creative aspect, but so that I know how to fix it when it breaks. But if newer machines don't break as much, there's less immediate need for the repair side, which I can definitely live with.

If that HPI is that much fun I would personally upgrade a few things to improve it, but that is just me. I like seeing the vintage stuff with some modern electronics. If it likes to break things then I would probably start with the radio system and just a servo and leave the rest as is!
As far as a new car or kit, it all depends on your budget. You will need to invest in a good battery charger, a nice set of tools, batteries of course, and hang on tight because one car is never enough.
@Greywolf74 has some really good info on batteries and chargers. I would start with reading that. hopefully you can search some keywords and use his name to narrow down the content, don't forget to use the "@" in front of the names so the list of names shows up as you type it.

We all have our favorite cars here, so I'll leave the research to you and some others will come along and make some recommendations. We have had another new member come in recently and started a thread of what to get based on xxxx amount. Its a good read.

I hope this helps a bit.

Welcome to the site. I would dress it up and shelf it. Parts are becoming scarce.

Good luck with you decision. I'm about to pick up an acx10iii jlu kit. Their last one as it's been discontinued.

Thanks for the replies so far. I'd probably spend $400-500 pretty easy without batteries for a new car. Wife would get me one for Xmas if I tell her which one.

I have a Multiplex charger that is LiPo capable, but I don't think it has cell balancing capability, so that might not be the wisest choice. Does fine for NiMH, though.

Welcome to the forums. I’m pretty new myself. You mentioned the Typhon. I love the look of it. And they make a TLR (Team Losi Racing) upgraded version. Worth a look.

Welcome aboard! :) The 6s Arrma Typhon is a great rig. With a quick tire change it is a great parking lot basher.

welcome as other have said there are many types of cars now, I saw you said you like kits, there’s probably a kit for just about everything now in many different price ranges so it’ll all depends on what style you like however kits are generally more expensive

I was going to suggest the Team Corally Kagama..... it was on sale for around $600 in RTR form on one of these websites. OH! I saw it in @PainKiller thread about his $800 budget, and what he should get.

Here's a pic of my car.

I did come up with a list of modern electronics to modernize it a bit. How does this sound?

Futaba 3PV radio - that way I could add a car or two and use the same radio
Spektrum S6020 standard metal gear servo - way beefier than the S3003
Spectrum Firma 70A brushed ESC - cheap and should run this setup no problem, and give me reverse capability

I'd stick with the current motor and battery for it. It doesn't need to go faster.

My charger definitely does not have a balance port, so NiMH for this car. I don't think I'll mess with LiPos/brushless motors until I get a new machine.

Update: I spent a little money for this car and for future plans. Bought a 45mm turnbuckle to tighten the front steering up, modern radio, servo, 70A Spectrum brushed ESC, 12T 550 motor, and two new batteries.

I think this radio cost about the same as my old 2PCKA, but has all the features built in of a far more expensive radio from that era. Should be pretty sweet, and with model memory I can add any other future toys.

Hi and welcome!!! late as I am... to RCTALK.COM!!!
I am VERY into the Kyosho Optima and Mid.
I'm working on a few actual old kyoshos right now.
The re-release is same and not same... not all parts interchange between vintage and re-re.
That said, I have heard a lot of good things about the quality still being as it was 30 years ago etc.
The new parts I bought from Kyosho seems fine quality to me.
I also plan to hit a track or 2 with these cars as I get them done.
I don't really know what class or if they will actually compete but I've been loving the builds and doing the tinkering.
Fitting a new slipper in the old buggy, vintage chassis sets, different diff set ups... they are still fun for me now like they used to be.
They are a little more expensive though.
I recommend buying and building the 87 car anyways!
Have I mentioned I like Kyosho? 🤣

Whatever you do, I like vintage and I hope to see you build a nice vintage class truck! 😎
