When I was in the Navy, one of our squadrons at the Naval Air Facility WashDC hosted an international aerial photoreconnaissance competition. It was held out in the Nevada desert at NAS Fallon. When the F16's took off here, a lot of them would gun it and as soon as the tires left the ground they would shoot straight up in the air. I mean, perpendicular to the earth kinda straight up. I didn't even know they could do that. It never got old watching them do that because it looked insane.
All the teams did their best to impress as they arrived. And when they departed after the competition... WOW! Notable were some aircraft that took off as you described, then broke the sound barrier while accelerating straight up. It made the hair on your arms stand up.
Here's the NAS Fallon flight line on the morning before the competition started... an unusual rain shower made for a dramatic look as crews ready some A-6 aircraft for departure.
