With an $800 budget , what would you get?

I guess I never really thought about double sided foam tape to be such a good tool on an RC. I just heard of it recently in a YT video and thought that maybe it was a cheap and inexpensive way to adhere something to the chassis. And that it would only hold for a few weeks of bashing. But now I feel differently about it.

Also , if I get bigger tires (than stock) , I need to change the gearing?

I wouldn't pay that. IMO that's just one persons opinion of what an MT10 should be. I'd start with a box stock unit, minus the Reedy batteries and charger. Overpriced no doubt.
You can easily remedy any servo shortcomings for less than $50. Even the neutered Reedy motor and esc can be upgraded for pretty cheap. You can get a Quicrun 120a/3660 combo for $80 that would easily outperform the Reedy stuff.
This isn't race level Reedy electronics that are included with the MT10, probably more like the VXL stuff in the Rustler I'd say. Same lack of programming too.
The G2 Quicrun will net you 7.4v BEC, which you won't get out of the Reedy or TRX esc's. For $80, unbeatable I'd say.

All of mine have a cushioned pad under them cut from this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AH8PLI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've never had a failure due to vibration or impact, but I have had them pull free from tape. Both approaches have merit, and are obviously experience based, so no worries.
Me too. The tape gets soft and has a tendency to "let go" if the esc gets hot. I like to use tape combined with zip tie. Depends on the setup, some esc's never get hot enough to cause the glue to fail. I still like the peace of mind the zip tie gives me.

It definitely seems high in price. I just found it tempting to see a truck I like with all those upgrades on it. Kinda like how the Rustler Ultimate appeals to me.

Is a fan necessary (or a good idea) for the ESC on stock rigs?

That WP120A combo would be what I'd install in many RTRs. :thumbs-up:

A lot of RTR speed controls are of the Hobbywing RTR variety made specifically for many brands of RCs... minimum specs for minimum price. The same goes for other RTR electronics... the lowest priced servo, ESC, and radio to "get by" for general use and to make the RTR platform price attractive.

I got some protek double sided rc tape and it seems to handle pretty well. I'm surprised my slash is even going with how many over heated shutdowns it has, every time it happens it smells like burnt electronics. "...tape combined with zip tie." Sounds a lot like my car...

I have 3 Traxxas VXL 3s esc's currently, the Hoss esc had a fan from factory I believe, the bandit and rustler didn't come with fans. They seem adequate without. Really depends how hard it's getting worked I feel. A big tire MT will likely need it. Or even an ST or buggy if geared aggressively. They can be added to most any esc.

I have added fans to all of my Traxxas VXL-3S that didn't come with one. Amazon has a chineesium direct fit model that is much cheaper than the OEM.

My other brands have all come with fans. I think they are one of those things that's: better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

I should clarify, I'm sure the MT10 Reedy electronics will surely get the job done, just wanted to give an example of how cheaply it can be replaced and upgraded if/when the situation comes up. I'm sure the Castle setup is even better than the Quicrun, but a good bit more coin, plus I'm not sold on sensored setups for bashing. I feel it just adds another potential failure that provides minimal return. I've never felt as though a sensorless setup wasn't smooth enough. Just me.

I agree, better to have. Issue I have with fans is how easily they get fouled up, usually unknown.. until, well, you know..🔥
At least the esc's have thermal protection, so should shut down before getting that far. Motors is where the challenge is for me, I've had a rotor or two come apart over the years. Also why I like to stick with the cheaper stuff and gear conservatively. Ideally, the motor shouldn't need fans to keep it alive.

I used to race on high traction clay with one of Castle's first round of Mamba Max brushless combos... sensoreless mind you. Those were some darn good systems that felt really good at controlling lower speeds through the twists and turns. Nowadays, I'm a backyard track basher that enjoys lower budgeted systems. Hobbywing keeps upping the game when it comes their EZRun lineup. The G2 speed controls, now being sensored, rivals some of Hobbywing's "race bred" stuff from years ago.

The levels/style of "bashing" a person does can differ from one person to the other. For my style of basing, I try to get close to what I would use in a racing scenario. My Kraton... that's a different story. I use the monster truggy to break up the top layer of dirt on the track outback, especially after a rain and things dry out. :thumbs-up: ;)

Just ordered the Maxx for my son. Now I just need to figure out which one I’m getting for myself and order it.

All the finalists I’m looking at seem great so I’m just gonna pick one and go with it. I may take another day or so but by Wednesday morning, I am pulling the trigger.
Sweet!! Congrats!

So uh, I know we all been loading you up with our greatest ideas and all.. I have to share this one too, LOL.

The Associated Rival MT10 is what, $330? Well ya know, there is the Associated Rival MT8 1/8 scale MT8, right? Which happens to be on sale at several places right now for JUST $20 dollars more.. :p🤷‍♂️😎

I think they may be doing away with it. It also doesn’t seem to get the praise the mt10 does. I’ve been grabbing up spare parts for ours. Problems we have had with it were 100% our fault.

It is a fun truck though!

Yeah, the EZ Run stuff is about as rich as I'll ever get. I run a high traction back yard track with all kinds of rtr and EZ Run configurations, perfect I find. The Corally combo is the strongest I've sampled, which of course is just a G1 Max 8.

I saw that. But if I was gonna go 1/8 scale , I’d go Kraton , Typhon or Sledge. The price is attractive , though.

I like the MT10 , Typhon TLR Tuned , Rustler Ultimate and Stampede 4x4 VXL (I’d wanna swap out those ultra shocks) . I wonder if a Stampede Ultimate will ever come out.
