I've thought about locking it, but after talking with a top level RCDRL member (powermad racing), he advised against it because it can make the car inconsistent and less tuneable. He mentioned that even at the top level, on the super high grip tracks, most guys wont run north of 20mil. But he did give me advice on helping seal the diff, like letting the paper ring sit compressed for 24 hours and then snugging the bolts down one more time.

The diff leak was on me though, its an aluminum housing and I went amateur hour and didn't loctite the screws.
Oh ok. I have always assumed a lot of guys used spools like a lot of the 1:1 guys do. Kinda makes sense in a way I guess since it would make launches a bit more forgiving in the smaller scale. I need to get off my butt and get the Radiomaster installed in the Drag Slash. I have a drag race setup in that radio that has some pretty killer launch adjustments. Just pull the trigger full and it will vary the throttle automatically at set points in a timer. So launch at say 50% for .3 seconds, ramp up to 80% during the next .5 seconds or so, then ramp to full. Or any variance of that.

Yeah i think the radio makes a big play once you're putting down low turn power. Haven't really done much launch control through mine yet though. Just at a .3s throttle delay on launch right now. The tires don't really have any problem handling the power from that 8.5t. That 4.5t you're running is gonna be a different story 😅 that girl is gonna be FAST

The goopy gears were def slowing you down!!! Congrats on top speed!!!😎👍😁
Even with that bit of breakage, awesome pass!!!

So noob question... what is the burnout pad you use made put of? Material? Whats the surface like?
How hot are the tires supposed to get? Is it just warm is warm enough to hook up or are some compounds better for cool weather/track surface temp...
If you'd rather talk in PM its cool... I just want to understand how this works in 1/10 scale.

The vid was great btw! Fun to follow along and experience the action! Thanks!😁

Thanks brother!

Its just a carpet square that I got from a customer that was left over from an office remodel. Pretty short carpet and very durae. The carpet helps warm the tires a bit better than asphalt and also helps keep them clean. Ill generally do a burnout on the pad until the car starts to hop, which means theyre warm and hooking good. Track temp also plays a big role in how much traction you'll have. Different compound tires are used for different track conditions but I haven't gotten too into that. I believe that generally as traction increases you'll want a harder compound tire to reduce fold and increase power pushed to the ground. But thats something I've yet to play around with. With temps being mild and the track being unprepped I've just been using the softest compound I can get. I think the guys running on actual drag tracks with rubber down and in the heat are probably running a medium/soft compound, while I'm running super soft clays.

But yeah, these no prep tires actually can get super sticky if your conditioning and temp is on point. I've even seen some videos where guys will use a heat gun to warm up their tires to increase how much heat they hold before they make a pass and decrease any dust that could end up on the tire.

No need to PM, I like to put all this stuff put there so everyone can learn, and if I'm wrong someone can chime in so that I'm not giving out bad information lol

Cool! Ok so theres a lot in tires... a fun rabbit hole at some point I bet!
Man! Your car screams now, huh?!😎

Thanks for explaining how that works! I'm all for learning too so keep making vids and I'll keep learning more too!!
👍
Johnnydmd had vids and I watched, read, followed. His builds were so beyond me! 😍😎🤣
Its nice to pick back up on more drag action!!!

( I didn't want my noobness rubbing off on your thread! 🤣)

Yeah man it learned real quick how important tires were lol

Johnny has a lot a great content on his YouTube channel, and some of the most impressive builds on the forum. Really wish I had the chance to go out there an run with him some day. But he was great about sharing all of his builds and experiences so we'll always have all of that to look back on! (Provided links for anyone that may not know of how insanely cool he was).

This entire thread is noobness 🤣 I dont think I can consider myself an actual no prep guy until I'm hitting sub 2's. Its a great learning experience for all of us!

Yeah, yours looked like it hooked really well on a number of those runs. Our Mustang has the wide Pro-Lines on it. Not sure if those are a mistake or not. I mostly just bought them because they look cool. But on our surface here, it's kinda smooth concrete in our launch area. So fatties might be necessary.

And yeah, the first few runs are going to be baby steps. It scares me mostly because there isn't a lot of room for tracking left and right if there are cars parked. And I'm hoping it doesn't get that squirrely. Breydon almost got into a parked car with the stock DR10 on 3s on a chilly day in late spring. It launched, hooked, then quickly unhooked and shot far right just as it got into it's stride. Likely some dust on the lot.

No one really does proline wide tires they stretch normal width tires on wide wheels and proline is starting to become not as competitive compared to like dragworkz, voodoos

Yeah, I only bought them for the look. I never even intended for our drag slash to get built into anything but a fun car to run against the stock DR10 we have here. There is not an RC drag scene here at all as far as I know anyway, so no real point in trying to build a competitive car. Back in the day, the 1/4 rail dragsters and funny cars were big here. But nothing in 1/10.

And my Pro-Lines were bought back before Horizon took over and ruined Pro-Line 😉

That was kind of my thought in the beginning too, it was the first tire I bought. They look great and the traction is THERE. But ultimately, the thinner tires that are out now are pretty crazy.

I think the wide pro lines will be great to help get the car dialed in initially. They have tons of traction conditioned or not, as long as you can keep them warm. But once you get setup dialed in and start pushing lower it will probably be the first thing you change out. I've got like 6 different sets of tires I've been trying out. Maybe next year I can do a video on tire hunting

Whenever I repair the RB10 I always think about how it's just a DR10 with Buggy tires and a buggy body. These photos further prove my point.
You are exactly right lol

Reading through this....you have something in tire selection with this build I don't. Because of the hubs my options are factory foam and.......
That being said....I may consider getting a custom adapter or having a set of rims made for big fat M/T slicks back there...even if they aren't practical to run I would use em on the shelf lol

Johnny’s thread here on his RJ build might be a pretty good read for you. He was our drag racing king.

Ultimately I think you’re going to have to work with prep to make those foams work, but I’ve never used foams before so I really don’t know. If you can get the foams to hook up they will be faster though, because of how light they are compared to a rubber tire. But foams do come in different compounds, so that there offers additional tunability.

I’m not finding anything for adapters, but you could have some machined, if you’re apt in 3d modeling you could design them, and then there’s companies that you can send that model to and they’ll do the machining and mail them to you. If you get that far you could even start selling them, I’m sure there’s other guys out there that would be interested.

I watch the guys going for the world speed record. Kevin talbot etc, and they are all running foam for it's ability to stay intact at high rpm. I don't expect issues performance wise....but looks wise...I am this guy all day...

Yeah, those are my favorite wheels/tires as far as looks go for the no-prep cars. I bet they suck compared to some of the ones to comp guys use.

These aluminum ones from SSD are going on my Pinto build though.

I know you've already seen my post on your thread,

But for anyone in the future that may find this thread while looking for an RJ speed hex adapter check here

Might have to check the bolt spacing but here's some rubbers if you're looking.

A post to note on FB. Could probably message the guy and ask for part numbers

I recommend baad racing better then ssd the fronts can be ssd but if you want a bead lock that bites better baad racing is the wheel trust me I know
