This crawler is the rgt Rock hammer. I bought it at a weak moment when putting together a Banggood order around 1 1/2 yrs ago. It was one of those flash deal group buys at 196$. When it came I thought it look far better than the pictures, suspension was a little stiff, steering radius like an 18wheeler, and electronics terrible.
So I just put a battery in it and went to one of my crawler spots. Other than what’s mentioned above I saw this had great potential. It was climbing all over the place even on its stock tires.
So I dug around and found a dumbo receiver and bond it to that, put a different servo in it and a 1080 esc and started thinking about the steering. It had dogbones in the front but the axles are the old type from years ago, maybe axial originally designed them but they are on redcat Everest and the gen7. So I ordered an upgraded steering kit and axles from redcat along with lockers(rgt are plastic). I also ground off sharp edges on the axle housings.
With the steering and modulation improved performance was starting to get very good. Side hilling needed improvement. Bought some cheap Banggood aluminum wheels and tires. The weight on the corners was a big help but the suspension still too stiff.
This and models like it look to have great ground clearance. It comes at a price of side hilling and tipping over backward. Softer suspension was in order. Had some redcat Gen8 shocks in my bin so I drilled some new holes to get the rear where I wanted and mounted the shocks.
Looking at my rgt now you will think it gets caught on everything. The ground clearance is still there but it’s disguised with sag. As it goes over something the wheels drop down looking for grip. Side hilling is very good now with electronics position and heavy cage body holding it back.
This is it right now. I’m in process of fitting a Creep body, moving around the battery, electrics and still messing with the front suspension. I do not recommend spending a lot of money upgrading an rgt. They are fine for what they are. The newer design of this truck (rgt trample) comes with some very nice upgrades (hw1060, better motor, dumbo radio, cvds up front, metal geared trans...and is around $270) None of these upgrades I put on this were expensive or something I can use on something else when I ruin this transmission. If I where doing this now it buy that trample, lower it and move everything fdrward. This is a cheap build but man, it’s like the best performer I have. Sometimes it gets up hills my trx6 will not climb and far and away better side hilling. It’s not going to win any competition but will put to shame many rigs at my crawler spots.
