There is no better way to learn an RC and how to work on it than building a kit. Sadly, beginner kits seem to be going the way of the dinosaurs, so there isn't many options. But the absolute easiest kit to build would probably be the
Traxxas Slash.

Not only is this an easy kit to build, because it comes with nearly everything, but there are so many upgrades out there for it your son can hop it up to his heart's content, and turn it into almost anything from a monster truck, road cruiser, dirt oval car, etc. We turned our Slash into this no-prep drag car.

The only things you will need to buy are a couple batteries and a charger. And you can start out with a 7 cell NiMh pack, and move up to LiPo's later and convert it to brushless if you want, for some extra power.
I'd just recommend no matter what you go with, buying a good charger from the get go is a very smart move. And for that, the
Hota D6 Pro is going to be awesome right from the rip, and be plenty powerful enough to carry you deep into the hobby should you choose to go that route. They also have them in trasparent
blue or
green.
And lets face it - if you hang out here, get a second job, because you're going to need it. So get a good charger now while you still can
