Stepped away from RC for the most part over the last year. I've run my crawler a little but have been mostly involved with custom diecast and diorama work.

Co-worker had a 2WD Slash roller he decided he wasn't going to do anything with and handed it off to me. Motor is toasted, ESC works, servo works, Needs front knuckles and C blocks but already has RPM arms and the shocks are actually in great shape.

So I decided to go full Amazon special on it. Surpass brushless setup, aluminum knuckle and block set, bug body, well rated but cheap tires and a couple other goodies as well as a FS gyro receiver since I already have the GT5 radio.

Parts will all be here tomorrow and then it's assembly time. Pics of how I got it and the lovely motor that actually did turn when power was applied, although the sound was horrible.

This is going to be a straight up parking lot basher build so I'm sure it will evolve but I wanted to start it on the cheaper side.

Yes, that is a bearing cage at the bottom.

Glad to hear you may potentially be catching the rc bug again! I've recently gotten the itch back again, myself.

BTW, you may want to contact @DavidB1126 he may be able to reuse those rusted parts 🤪

Did you say free? 🤣
Haha. Even if I end up putting a traxxas motor back in it I'll be about where the local used market is on money spent.

I thought about taking parts out of the vorteks or Rustler but decided I didn't want to down one of the 4wd trucks because if it snows I like playing with those.

Waterproof my butt! 🤣

Right? Lol. The sounds it made when I powered it up were amazing. You would have thought it was a metal gear transmission with teeth floating around loose.
I'll bet it did 🤣

Parts arrived, did a quick mock up assembly so I could test the motor and esc then gave it a little test rip.

Motor is coggy at low speeds which is where my expectations were for a $61 brushless setup. I gave it a bit of throttle and I think I'll be very happy I put a gyro receiver in it.

The tires also hooked up far better then I expected on wet pavement. Tomorrow after the glue on them dries we will see how well they handle a few rpm. For $31 they come pretty highly recommended.

$18 headlights with RGB halos.

Need to find my extra batter straps, actually secure the esc, glue the headlights in and probably lower it a bit. I see a LCG chassis in my future.

"Free" project cars lol.

Trade? Jk lol
Enjoy!

Although I wish I had a stock, well OEM+ slash again. If I had the moneys I would pick up a stock slash and race spec slash as a fun class. My modded slash is too much of a monster now

Since the Surpass ESC doesn't have any mounting holes I printed a platform for the top of the stock esc location so I can use the super sticky 3m adhesive I use when I want something to be close to permanent. It was missing the battery hold down whish isn't a big deal because I use hardshells in my bashy type trucks and like to use velcro straps. I'm currently printing a spacer for the end of the battery tray so it is a tight fit front to back.

I'll be curious to see how this cheap motor/esc combo works out. I spent the extra $14 for the programming card that allows the adjustment of LVC, Punch, Brake force, and neutral range. If it holds up decent in the Slash 2WD I might be able to justify a 2S and lower KV setup for my old RC10T. Although that means I also need to source some stub axles and suspension pins for it because I know I'm missing several of the E clips in my suspension.

Pretty obvious what time frame this came from. :hehe:

Oh boy. That's a blast from the past huh.

Oh boy. That's a blast from the past huh.

I really need to do a complete teardown on it, probably do some sort of refresh on the chassis coating. I would like to get a low KV 2S system in it at some point and run it. I just know it's going to be one of those projects that drags on for a bit once I start it.

Oh, the thought of someone handing me a RC to do with what I want... sweetness! Is this going to be a Slash (SC) to Rustler (ST) build?

I probably could have picked up an RTR for what I'm into it right now haha but that's ok because it gave me an excuse to tear it down and familiarize myself with the car. Plus I needed a distraction from the 5 other projects I should have been working on instead of throwing together a basher lol.

Actual footage of my workflow sometimes.
:woohoo:

It will probably stay pretty much a Slash. This is going to be a parking lot basher type truck at this point so other than most likely moving to an LCG chassis. Once I get the handling dialed in and a feel on how it drives I will probably put the Proline 67 F100 Heatwave body on it. As @9x19 said above though these Summtlink bodies are a great deal for a basher. $35-$45 for a prepainted and cut shell instead of about the same for a clear shell.

Those Summitlink bodies are my go to Slash bodyshells, they can be made to look good, sometimes they go for only $20 and they're fairly durable.

If you plan on running on-road I'd reccomend linear springs along with the LCG kit. It makes the handling more predictable. Black Traxxas springs are only $2 per a set.

I think it needs a spool but it's surprisingly stable and proved to be a blast on wet asphalt. The cheap GoolRC wheel and tire set did well and I did give them a couple of hard throttle shots.

The ESC barely got warm but the motor did heat up a bit so I think different gearing and a heatsink and fan are needed. Possibly some air ducts too.

Quick flyby video. Might try to do a little more with the gopro this afternoon.

I would reccomend a sealed diff and thicker oil instead, a spool will reduce your turning radius quite a bit. What is your current gearing setup?
