Getting stared on a class 2 competition truck. It will be built to SORCCA rules.
I want to build a super competitive crawler and make it so it gets maximum scale points.

These are the SORCCA rules

http://sorrca.com/rules/2021rules.pdf

Starting with a GSpeed V3 carbon frame.
I am going with a forward motor mount and the Creeper-T transfer case.
This allows me to get a full interior.

Going for AR45 portals and a low CG chassis.

This is what I have so far.
The power train is in the frame. I have a steering servo and a mock up winch servo up front. I’m going with an internal spool winch.

The Body will be the regular RC4WD Mojave 2 body.
This is my first hard body and my first scale truck. Should be fun. But it is outside my regular stuff.

Very cool and looking forward to it.
Just some info for you, I used a hard body on my SCX10 build and found it to be very top heavy and couldn't keep it on her feet.
I'll paint up a regular body just for crawling but making this hard body a shelf queen.

That is the thing with the hardbody. And all the scale stuff does not help. Metal roll cage etc.

I enjoy having a rule set so I can keep a focus. Fifty points is all I can get so no use hurting performance by over doing it.

This is sorta what I’m going for.

But keeping it super light and low. Is going to be the challenge.

OK
Hats off for Horizon Hobbies. I ordered this body off eBay because it was the lowest price and free shipping. Less than 72 hours later the box is sitting on my workbench.

Ok I think I like this so far. Found a pencils holder that is perfect to buck the flares around. Once I get big ugly flares I will pinch the front and get to mounting the body. Not trimming anything just moving the flairs out and up.

Going very slowly .

That was nerve wracking but fun.

I know I will do it again and make a better job of it. The wheelbase of a TF2 is 11.4? Anyhow I had it really push the wheelwells back.
I want 12.3 or 313 mm wheelbase.

I don’t have axles or the body mounts so I can’t go any further than the pinch front end and the bobed rear bed . And the flair’s.

Time to think about colors. And paint scheme.

Got the message this morning my front portals at being shipped…..
As I fell back to sleep thinking about my fancy KYB portals I realized the message said front?. O crap
I ordered a front portal. 144.00 seemed like a good price for a set of axles. But it’s just the front one.
So I had to order the rear portal assembly for an additional 100.00.

I very concerned about the wheel base. I thought it was 12.3 but it’s 11.4. I have not had the best performance from short wheelbase rigs. But comp crawling allows a winch so I’m probably goring to go 12 inch.

I purchase a piece of cheap all thread rod from ace. It’s like three feet for 2.00. I cut that up and make links. Once I have the wheels in the correct spot I can replace the mild steel all thread with proper stainless hi clearance links.

It gets better. Somehow in my sleep I ordered two axles. Now I have 18.00 to eat with for the next ten days but two rear portals.
I’m just glad I did not over draft.

I did the same crap when I ordered spare sensors for my eMeter. I turned around like 5 days later and placed the order again. Apparently I forgot I had already placed the order. smdh

I was going to cancel one axle but they are packaged together and I can use the extra rear portal . Now I just need to build another rig around it 😂

I’m starting to get my head around the SORCCA rules.
There is an updated rule set for 2021.

I kinda got class 1 and class 2 mixes up a little.
I thought I needed a grill and tire coverage on the front.
I thought the tire inner edge had to be inside the body front and rear. But I was mistaken.

The rules don’t rally say this.
But the wheels can be forward of the front bumper.
Don’t need a windshield.
Don’t need to cover the tires .
Don’t need a rear bumper.
I can put the wheelbase any length and just shop off whatever hits.

I’m glad I did the flares. When I build a class 1 rig that experience will be great.

This video explains a lot.

I could never compete, too many things to keep track of. (sucks the fun out of it for me) BUT, I do like watching, and seeing the different rigs.

I have competed in everything. Except sports.
I started with slot cars and pinewood cars with some kids across the street.
Then I raced BMX in the seventies. During the eighty’s I built and raced drag cars and SCCA cars.
Then I started racing model airplanes in a thing called pylon. I loved that.
After that I raced bicycle road bikes and mountain bikes.
That led to motorcycle land speed racing. That was good because it combined aerodynamic from airplanes. Gearing and two wheeled speed from bicycles And engine tuning stuff from drag racing.

Now I am trying to just have fun.

I just like competing because it gives me a focus.
That way I don’t try to build a vehicle that is trying to do it all.

I see at least four sports in there, just sayin'.

I guess I meant sports that involve ball teams.
I am just not dedicated enough to practice.

Been working on the body for about two days. I’m now to the point of primer.

Still not sure about paint color.

This is the body sitting on the chassis up side down. So it is sort of like the suspension fully compressed.
The wheelbase is 313 mm.
I don’t have the body mounts yet or the axles. So this is just to stretch the fenders.

I have been sanding filling and getting the body looking pretty good.
Still don’t have the body mounts or all the axles so I can’t cut or mount anything yet.

I did get a front portal axle. It’s a KYX front portal and it looks really, really nice.

I now have to get the suspension setup working. This is what it should work like.

No bump steering
No binding
Minimal side to side shift when going through the travel.

The link lengths are in the description.

The drive shaft and right upper link are parallel with the motor. Everything is as low as possible. I want the frame to hit the axle at the same time the shocks bottom out.
And when it’s at rest it should be about 50% of the shock travel.
That’s the goal anyhow.
