What was your first builder's kit?

Either a Kyosho Pegasus (i can't remember if that was a kit. Probably was)
Or a Tamiya m01 mini Cooper.

The m class chassis used to have a huge fallowing and thier own racing class. Was a super cheap & fun class. Now there's very little info I can find on that class. Wierd.

I have a vintage rc car collecting problem. @Littlemotor can vouch.
I have more fun hunting them down and the parts to build/restore old rc's then I do actually running them anymore. Well.... its pretty close to a 50/50 but I thoroughly enjoy it.
Nothing more exciting then finally finding THAT piece you've been on the search for for 2 years and getting it finally and completing a build.
I feel similarly about resto/mod build/rescues. So much fun when you finally get going on an old project and see it finished! 😎👍

Duratrax Mini Quake SE was my first kit build. I cut my RC teeth on a nitro rustler as my first RC. I converted a stock to aluminum build and built a carbon fiber one too. Then my first kit was the mini quake. Here’s what was around for it almost 20 years ago

Kyosho Stadium Baja. still have it. "restored" it with some rerelease parts and Parma body. still run it lightly.

i wanted a Tamiya Blitzer Beetle but they weren't making it in 1998. then saw this add in RCCA and headed down to the hobby shop, they had one in stock.

Are we talking crawlers or just anything? I would have to admit the first thing I ever built from a new kit was an LC Racing LC12B1. The first crawler I ever built was a scx10 based rig from parts I collected until I had a complete truck. It was supposed to be a "budget Build".......Would it be a surprise to anyone to know that its currently under construction right now? Custom kits compiled from purchased parts are really neat.

I will own this bug at some point 😍

Mine was the Axial Yeti. It was so fun to build. I had a great time building it just to find out it was a complete turd! The design in the front suspension was so bad. Every time you crashed the front hinge pins would bend because there was no real support. In hindsight I would have built the Losi Rock Rey.

Axial Yeti: the kit that led me down a long road of kit building!
My first was the Axial Capra. Fun build. No regrets.

The most incompetently engineered RC truck in RC history, the Proline Profusion. My son has it now. When it runs properly it's one of the hottest SCT trucks made. It has issues and a lot of them but the truck was fun none the less.
Lucky bastard. I always wanted the proline buggies and monster truck, all 2wd.

The fastest Frog... I think they must have taped one to the space shuttle! 🤣
I wonder what "new materials" were "created" for this buggy exactly! 🤔
Well, being a young punk kid with no hobby shop www online forum guidance, I did my best with what money I had. Retail store at mall had a few RC boxes on the shelf. From what I remember... Frog, Grasshopper, Big Bear, Lightning, Boxer, and Buffalo. "Retail" store with "retail" prices... 🤯. I spent every Friday night going back and forth between Boscov's and Walden's bookstore... with frequent detours to Space Port (arcade). The magazine shelves had one radio control magazine for my viewing pleasure...

... 95% airplanes with a small section reserved for surface RCs every month. I was just lucky enough to see small ad in that magazine to mail order my $99 Frog and not pay $150 "retail" price. I'm pretty sure I got my first hobby grade RC from Tower Hobbies. The Tower Hobbies, not today's Tower Hobbies 🤪.

I used to buy those mags at Ben Franklin store in Merredith NH! I also fell in love with the Tower ads and cars because of this magazine!
I was utterly helpless after a guy I knew fired up his Vanning and ran it around til the chain snapped! I NEEDED AN R/C! 😳
The Frog for under $100 was the deal of a lifetime!!! Wow! 😎 (They are STILL more than that!)🤣
I bought most of my early R/C's from hobby shops. Thankfully not retail, full blown prices either.
I regret not giving AYK a closer look back then but I love vintage Kyosho. There were LOTS of r/c's I wish I'd bought actually but I'm happy with my collection today. 👍

The Yeti was indeed a joy to build. I was I had a power screwdriver for that one 😁 . The hinge pins... a design flaw, or designed weak point? A couple of cents worth of steel... up and running again. 😅🤣

Yeah, I was hoping for more of a one RC to do it all type platform from the Yeti... a flying pig she was.

Design flaw for sure! I got some hardened steel hing pins for it, and since those didnt bend they instead broke the plastic on the chassis. If they would have designed a hinge pin block that would have never been a problem. I ended up with a rock rey at some point and th a t thing was an absolute beast.

Lucky bastard.
Proline's 2wd trucks were pretty good. When they switched to making 4x4s everything went south. It's like they were given a release date for the Pro MT whether it was ready or not and the Pro fusion was "good enough". I think if Proline had R&D there 4x4s for an extra season they could have been spectacular.

good luck, they're a pain in the butt to find complete in good shape. they weren't real durable and the chassis' crack at the back along the rear arm mounts and gear box. so good luck.
although to share a cheat code. its just an Outrage ST with a baja bug body and the Outrage ST can be found. and is cheaper. Team Bluegroove repops the body, you'll just have to track down the hens teeth that is the chrome parts (head lights, tail lights)

and in stock form the gearbox is terrible! however you can do what i did and use rerelease Ultima gears. it also shares suspension parts with the Ultima.
also several suspension parts from the Tower Hobbies ST-15 nitro stadium truck fit.

i also still have the original unused sticker set for the body. I'm eventually going to scan them so i can make duplicates.
