On the reciever it says 27MHz no mention of AM, FM or 2.4
SO now everyone knows it's AM or FM and the antenna is not the problem. Your receiver uses crystals which may be the problem and finding a new receiver Am or Fm is impossible as well as crystals.. What is on the transmitter?. It should be labeled AM or FM.? So best option is to buy a new 2.4 radio. All this runaround when everyone thought you had a 2.4 radio.

Sorry man as you can probably tell i'm new to RC as my dad gave me his Tamiya Subaru Impreza WRC 2001 Prototype Car! On the transmitter it also says 27MHz.

I suspected it is AM so buying a new receiver is out and replacing the crystal is out. The antenna being bad isn't. So go buy a new 2.4 radio and problem should be solved. Everyone thought you had a 2.4 radio which I didn't think so.

I've now finished putting in the new receiver and the jerkiness of the speed has now seemed to have gone. However (i've added a new thread) my steering still locks up at some points. The only thing i can think of that is the stock steering from the tamiya tb-01 chassis can't handle this power from a 12t motor.

It's the other way round. The 12 motor is draining all the power from the steering servo.

What is the BEC power output? If you can change it so it will have more power do so. Program the esc to soft start of the line. Or add a external battery.
Go brushless. this is why I went brushless. The 12T motor is power Hungary.

Power Output of the motor?

The motor is draining all the power. Robbing the BEC of what power is needed to run the steering servo and ESC. The simples thing to do is add a external receiver battery to see if that will fix the problem.
