I would definitely start with a foam plane.
If you build your own and have no experience flying then you may waste hours after hours of time on a crash.
The sad part about flying RC planes is you WILL crash.
Foam planes can be fixed sometimes with just clear packing tape.
Again, I highly recommend starting with a Realflight simulator.
A lot of the models on the Sim you can buy. That's why I went with my Cub.
I have Realflight 9 and the plane that @Doom! posted is on the simulator also.

All I fly are foamies.
OK, I need to start researching as I have a decent park nearby and have wanted one for longer than I can recall. I was born in 71 and I can recall (after my dad passed in 79) finding all his string control planes (balsa I assume) that he had in the basement (wish I had them now).

It's amazing how lifelike the simulator is. There is a ton of planes still available and that's how I chose my plane.
Flying it was exactly like my simulator.

got some work gloves because I was tired of my sweaty greasy hands slipping everywhere lol

I got this:

I managed to get a couple minutes of flying in before the wind picked up and blew it into the bushes, luckily no damage.
I feel thats an accomplishment for my very first flight !
