Ok, I have to try this. Is there a limit on how long you can soak parts?
You can turn your plastics into goo if you soak too long. So yes, it has a limit. It is best to monitor it every few hours. I have never had any problems soaking overnight, but my overnights are never more than 7 hours or so.

Really digging how well you've documented everything here man. Great thread!

Thanks! I’ve learned everything I know from other people sharing their experiences. It’s important to give back.

I have done a few restos over the years. My latest being a Losi XXX-SCT. You can see it HERE if interested. I love hunting for discontinued stuff for some reason. I managed to find a lot of parts over the course of about a year, searching here and there, but it was the gear cover that eluded me. One would pop up from time to time, but at $30+. I was reluctant to pay that, so I kept hunting and I eventually landed one pretty cheap, which finished the resto. This was probably my favorite resto job. A little before and after...
Wow, love how clean that is! Looks brand new. Nice work.

I’ve spent about a year collecting parts before starting this one too. The eBay hunt is indeed addicting, although I found the best deals from random hobby stores with terrible search engine optimisation.

Thanks, that’s great info. I have some broken parts I’ll never use that I can test with.

Very true!

Thanks. Yours is going to as well from the looks of this.

I had the exact same experience. I found a lot of new sources for vintage stuff by scouring Google, searching through other model exploded views for matching part numbers, etc, and finding hobby shops I never heard of. It almost kills me to know there are still brand new parts out there for my XXX that I haven't snagged from these hole in the wall hobby shops. But I gotta keep myself in check sometimes, and save some for the other guys 😉

Sorry to derail the thread, but what are those tires? Me Likey!!!

I love the "4 series" Associated rides but had to let most of them go in order to fund other areas of the hobby. I got to hand it to ya... buying it and putting all that effort into an abused platform is impressive.

Thanks Thank You GIF by Duke Cannon Supply Co.

Let's go further down the rabbit hole and check out those suspiciously large rear hubs and stupid-long rear arms. This truck would have had a stance.

(Comparison to a standard T4/SC10 rear hub)

Remember the Durango logo on the ball cups? Well, say hello to a couple of Team Durango 97mm CVDs. If anyone has a use for these and/or the rear arms and hubs, please reach out; they should go to someone who will use them.

I believe the Team Durango theme continues with the shocks. Can anyone confirm that for me?

She also took a hell of a hit in her front left at one point (you can see the zip-tie holding the front left arm on in the pictures up top), and maybe this is the injury that finally killed her. The shock wouldn't even depress.

I believe those shocks are from a Ofna/Hobao Hyper TT10

I think we have a winner!

The shocks even had the silicone boots still attached, but they were all perished.

So the running tally is now:

Team Associated SC10
Pro-Line Pro-2 SCT
Ofna/Hobao Hyper TT10
Team Durango DESC210
Traxxas Stampede 4x4

Happy McMaster-Carr day to all who celebrate!

In the spirit of "I ain't paying vintage prices for that", I sometimes I go looking for the actual hardware that we pay a premium for. I need a few more idler gear shafts, spacers for the top gear, and crush tubes for the rear wheel hubs. I figured I'd solve my hinge pin problem forever as well.
  • 416 Stainless Steel Dowel Pin 3/16" Diameter, 11/16" Long ($6.36 for a pack of 5)
  • Multipurpose 6061 Aluminum Round Tube 0.035" Wall Thickness, 1/4" OD, 1/2 Feet Long ($3.57 each)
  • Tight-Tolerance Air-Hardening A2 Tool Steel Rod, 7/64" Diameter, 1 Foot Long ($1.74 each)
It's hard to find actual measurements, especially real machining tolerances for bearing fits, for our cars, and that makes ordering parts like this a real roll of the dice. Let's see how we did.

1760604712095.webp

Nope.

OK, but the aluminium tube is a sloppy enough fit that we should be good, right?
1760604786006.webp

1760604806758.webp

Sad trombone noises.

Hinge pins?
1760604846945.webp

Yes, good.

Well, one out of three ain't bad, right? I guess I need to get my lathe running again.

I'm also trying the WD40 plastic soak trick from @WickedFog

No pre-cleaning, just dunk her in.

Spa day.
1760605237150.webp

And after 3 hours.
1760605265160.webp

Plastic looks better, no real change to flexion that I could tell. Doesn't feel soft or droopy in any way. I threw it back in to soak overnight, and I'll check on it after another 10 hours.

After a total of 13 hours in WD40.
1760640499726.webp

No change to how it felt before it went in. I think this is one of the "composite" arms, not straight-up plastic, though. I'll see if I can dig out a sacrificial part (always keep the broken pieces, kids) that might suffer more.

Let's meet our next contestant. This is part of the rear bumper bracing system, so is quite flexible.

Into the WD40 you go!

And14 hours later...

Looks great! Doesn't feel like goop, so I'll take this as a win. Probably one of those "test in an unobtrusive area" type situations. I'll definitely be using this for future restorations, thanks @WickedFog !

I've already set the obviously damaged parts aside, but let's do a final check. Is everything in a good enough state that I'd reuse it?

Front bumper brace got drilled through to accommodate the Pro-Line body mounts. Let's not re-use that.
IMG_3382.webp

Now this rear chassis brace... that's a snapped ballstud. I didn't notice when I did the disassembly, but you can see from the wear pattern that the previous owner just moved to the outer hole. I thought it was the left front that took a beating, but maybe it was the whole left side?
IMG_3383(1).webp

(But seriously, how do you snap a ballstud like this?)

The last frankenpiece I want to track down is the motor guard. Most definitely not an original SC10 part.

IMG_3384(1).webp

I can't find a copy of the Pro-Line Pro-2 SCT manual, but the rear end looks nothing like that.
1760767079911.webp

The Team Durango motor guard from the DESC210 is also different.
1760766589677.webp

The TT10 is a mid-motor truck, and clearly this isn't a Traxxas Stampede 4x4 part. So what am I looking at here, team? Is this really something from a sixth truck?
