Noob Questions about servos and radios too

Ok I started with a kyosho mp 7.5 buggy. I have no idea how strong the servos on it are but I will say that the steering servo is crap. It's weak and I can tell now that I found a few fellow jarheads that race over here in Iwakuni. I've been getting lots of help from them and from this forum so I thank you for that. Now I'm shopping around for a new steering servo to back up the stock weak one and I have no idea what a 1/8 buggy should take. I've seen some amazing oz's of pressure and I've seen some steep prices as well. Could someone kinda point me in the right direction for a good steering servo? I kinda picked some out of a hat so to speak and these are the ones I'm looking at.

Also I have the common 4 battery caddy and I'd like to upgrade to a recharge 6v hump pack. Do these really fit in the battery holder? Pictures on the internet are sometimes misleading and communicating in Japanese is NOT my strong point lol. Also I'm looking at getting another radio as well. I've narrowed it down to either a Airtronics MX-3X 2.4Ghz Competition Pistol Grip Radio which has the freq hopping or the Spektrum DX3S DSM 3CH Surface Radio. I like the freq hopping out of the Airtronics but I also like the capability to monitor temps with the Spektrum (don't know how it does it currently so if someone could explain that I would love to hear it)

First off, thank you for your service. Secondly, where to start with answering your questions! A 6 volt hump pack will make huge improvements to your servos performance. In some cases, stock servos that are weak on the aa's end up having plenty of power on the hump pack. As far as servos, look at Hitec. They have made quality radio gear for years and are the go to company for guys that run mt's with large tires. They will most definitely have a servo to suit your needs. I believe the radios you have picked out would all suit you, though I have no experience with them. I'm sure some others will chime in and be more specific. In the mean time, a rechargeable hump pack would be a great upgrade. As would a failsafe if you aren't running one already. Edit: A 5 cell hump pack will most likely fit in your radio box. Rx packs come in hump and flat configurations, so find out what you need before ordering.

Hey thanks for the tip. Now I can stop buying a bazillion AA batteries lol. I'll start with the hump and work my way from there. The DX3s is a great radio. It actually "binds" a specific receiver with your transmitter. The DX3s has a 10-model memory so you can add extra receivers for other vehicles. The RX that comes with DX3s has a telemetry port that allows you to connect sensors to the vehicle for speed or temp. I love mine and have used the heck out of it.

So I'm gonna guess that while the Airtronics freq hops the DX3 actually binds to the receiver so that someone else can't accidentally take over your r/c. Sounds like a good deal to me. I was recommended Airtronics by a friend but he has the 500 dollar one (mx11?) and while that's cool to have I'm not prepared to be castrated by my wife lol. I am not running a failsafe as of yet but I was planning on upgrading my radio to something that has that built in. I feel much safer with something built into the radio system I'm using.

The Spektrum actually freq hops as well....so do most 2.4Ghz units. When you turn it on....it finds an open channel and both the TX and RX hop on that channel and use it to communicate. I think there are like 74 channels it scans or something silly... Binding just makes sure your RX picks up on only your TX ;-)

The other nice thing about most of the newer 2.4 GHz radios that they have a built in fail safe.

The spektrum ones set themselves where they are at when you bind the xmitter/receiver. It's a nice feature to have so you don't need extra crap in your receiver box.

I have an old DX3.0. Works fine for me.

Thanks for the advice. The kiss method has worked for me so far and I'll be picking up a new radio soon....I'll see how the servos act with a hump pack and go from there....and then a charger....my wife is gonna kill me!

I'm going with the Airtronics MX-3x for now. It's 179 and has a great rep. Plus my buddy knows how to work every little feature on it so he can help me get it set up right. I like the Spektrum but at almost double the price and then another 100 or so for the telemetry it's kinda steep for me at the moment. There are other things I have to upgrade first before I get into a high end radio. I have Futaba servos at the moment and I don't really have a problem with them except for the power that it puts out. I just ordered a hump pack though so hopefully that will solve my woes for the moment till I can afford a more powerful servo.

If you want Airtonics....I have an MX-3FHSS 2.4Ghz setup I can part with ;-) I have one RX for it currently....but a buddy is borrowing the other.

I'll keep that in mind.....I just ordered a lot of stuff and the wife is about ready to drag the shotgun out on me lol. I'll pm you when I can risk getting something else lol. 300 bucks kinda puts her on edge if ya know what I mean. I ordered a Venom Pro charger, 3 bottles of diff oil, a shock oil pack from losi 45wt-90wt, 6v battery hump pack, 3 sets of springs, a pit mat (since I work on the dining room table , no garage in military housing), and a set of tires and rims. I'm still getting set up in the hobby and I warned her before I bought the car but she apparently didn't listen lol.

I'm getting there slowly. A buddy of mine and I swap parts and stuff whenever we need something and it helps smooth things out a bit with the wife. He's going all anodized with his inferno though.....we'll see how that goes.
