New RC what to do

I tried to build a snow track in my yard. It was a mess. Having a track is all fun and games till the dog poops on the track and it rains.
Stock slash or legends, spec racing is definitely an inexpensive way to get in to racing but it’s also the most contested. That’s fun just be ready for fierce competition.

I'm thinking of setting it up inside a barn , so at least it would be covered from the elements but yeah , I can see my dog just going at it and start digging tunnels in it -_-

Welcome to the forum Krimy.

Based on what you have posted here, perhaps an Arrma Vorteks 4x2 might get a foot in the RC door for you and your son. It's a basher, not a racer. But then again you won't have so much money in it you can't afford a separate racing platform if and when you decide to try that. Arrma is a durable platform. I'll add a link to it below. Just click on it.

This one has a 4x4 upgrade kit available and 3s Lipo upgrade capable if you decide to focus on the basher side of the hobby.

Hope this helps. Good luck and be sure to post up what you guys get. Cheers. 'AC'

to be 100% honest I am looking at the dirt racing a lot recently and I feel its amazing , fast and big .... most carpet racing I've seen on youtube were smaller scale ( or at least from what I saw ) I enjoy the fact of looking at a massive car / truck just sending it on big jumps haha
Your best bet would be to go to the local tracks and see what they are running. Some tracks only allow for one type of vehicle, and some have rules that are very restrictive, so, i would start by talking to the locals, and see what the rules are, and what is and isnt allowed. For example, where i am at, one track only allows stock 4WD buggies, another only allows stock 2WD short course trucks, and a third track allows stock and modified pretty much anything except monster trucks. It would also give you a chance to talk to the locals and see what they are running. We even have one track here that specifies exactly what motor, ESC and radio gear are allowed for each class (there rule is, only stock components offered by the kit manufacturer are allowed, as in, for Team Associated, it has to be all Reedy stock electronics). Its the biggest reason i got out of racing, is because it got to be way too restrictive and expensive needing multiple cars with stock electronics to run the different tracks. Anymore, i only run the demo derby, if and when i do run.

P.S., welcome to the asylum, as i always say.

Hello,

Figured I should do a post on here instead of the "presentation" thread.

So I am 34 , never had an RC before , last summer I got one for my son ( LiteHawk OverDrive ). I end up playing with it more than my son.
So here I am now looking to get something for me.

The problem is , I have no idea what the heck I should get lol , theres so much different options, I am totally lost. Here would be some of the things I am looking for :

1- I would prefer a Kit over a RTR ( simply to understand the whole mechanic of everything )
2- I would like to do some racing eventually , I love the competition side of it
3- I would like something like 1/8 or 1/10 scale
4- I would like something that I don't have to upgrade in a year.
5- My budget is about 1300$ CAD

I have seen the tekno / team associated but I don't know anything about those models.

Some Hobby center are telling me to go with a Arrma Kraton 6S or Traxxas Sledge as a first one .... but I feel like it dosent check most of my boxes lol.

so If you have any ideas , please let me know
Welcome to RCT! :welcome_sign:

There are no rules for track layout and such. Every hobby store or track owner will have their own track layout. But the tracks will have their own rules for each class they run. So check with your local track before you build.

You can't go wrong with Tekno, Losi, Kyosho, or Team Associated race kits. They are all track worthy competitors.

There is no one car fits all that’s for sure.
First thing I would do is locate a track and see what and when they race. See if it fits your budget and time availability. The thing about racing is everyone is involved on race day and you get to know everyone right away and they are all willing to help you adapt to there track. Stock slash, pan car, buggies all depends on the track.

As for a car or truck. If I had to buy a rig I would get the Techno 410.3.
1 …That’s a kit.

2… You can race eventually or bash or hotfoot around a dirt lot or asphalt parking lot.
3.. The SCT410.3 is a 1/10 scale short corse race truck. But it’s built from a 1/8 scale basher chassis that’s practically indestructible.
4…Not going to need upgrading much or total upgrade in a year.
5… 1300
325 Kit
325. Tekin ESC and motor
180 tekin servo
70 tekin hotwire
50 reciever
50 body
100 battery
100 tires and wheels.
And another 100 left for some metal servo horn and shock tops.

Not much to add to what these two guys said. 1/10 scale SCT, 1/10 & 1/8 scale Buggy are some of the more popular race classes so even if you dont want to go with the Tekno 410.3 You could get something else from Tekno, Losi, Kyosho, Associated, Xray, or Serpent and then just follow Iowa Crawler's list there. Happy Racing :)

Another thing to consider is if your local tracks use a transponder. Every track here uses a different type and brand, so, for the 3 bigger tracks around here, you need 3 different, expensive lap transponders, because, for some reason, the tracks here can't seem to agree on anything.

The transponders are 70-100 bucks. I have two that have 2 wires and one with 3 wires. Definitely check out what transponder to get. The 3 wire transponder cost over 100 dollars and does not work at any of the indoor tracks.

Here, one track uses MyLaps, one uses EasyLap, another one uses something else. It got ridiculous, so i bowed out awhile ago.

FYI, he is in Canada.

I am actively looking on this site :

QTM-rc.com

For a motor / esc / servo combo for the SCT410.3

Why are people talking about 4600 motor and not 2200 ??? Am I missing something ?? ( I mean from the few google search’s I’ve done )

For racing most trucks are limited to 2s.
On my track that has about a 30 meter straight I use a 4300 4 pole Tekin motor with a Castle Monster X. It is very fast and has excellent acceleration. If the track was bigger I would use a 4600 motor for greater top speed. On the shorter track the 4600 might lack punch.

so it would only need a single 2s ???? thats wicked haha , I'm getting the Rustler for my son , and he will be using dual 2s haha

I bought three 5000 ma 2 s batteries and I charge my battery’s between heats. I never have used more than one battery but I would always want to at the track.

LOL. I need all the batteries for going fast. Crawler though...

Me with my basher: "Damn, out of batteries".

Me with my Crawler: "Why did I bring so many batteries?".

that's sweet I was just expecting to be using like 2 batteries everytime so I would of needed like 4 to 6 in order to make sure to not have to charge everytime.
But If I only need a single one , this means that I can get like 3 batteries instead of 6.
Am I wrong to think that dual 2s will be faster than my SCT Single 2s ???? or is it quite different as far as acceleration and stuff goes ?

Until you get into 4S, 6S, 8S and higher, you will only need 1 battery per vehicle. I have never seen a dual 2S that wasn't actually a 4S ultimately, and you can't typically run 2 2S batteries together at most tracks that i have ever been at. Any one of the kits you are looking at would have to be paired with a 2S ESC and motor, since that is restricted by track rules.

My bad I guess I wasn't clear at all hahaha , Like I'm getting the Rustler VXL for my son ( he's 5 ) and he really want us to race at the local bike track everynow and then , but if I am getting the the SCT with the 4300kv will I just be left in the dust everytime we go to the track ? lol or will I have some type of fighting chance haha ?

It really comes down to the driver and competition. When I first started anyone with a Rustler could beat me with my SCT. But now after a year I don’t crash as much.
They break everything into classes so first you might run either a techno or the Rustler in Novic. You will be surprise how quick a five year old can be with a little practice. But they lack concentration. So you might have a chance haha
