Hi Guys,

I am very new to this hobby and need some help! I just recently bought a nitro RC kit. Kyosho kit with a GS15R engine. I have assembled everything, but i cannot get it to start. Tell a lie i got it to start twice out of like 100 attempts :S. Once when i thought id try it in the house and it just seemed like it was going to wake everyone up, so i turned it off by holding the fuel pipe.

Now it just seems to be taking forever, also there is fuel coming out of my exhaust is that right?

Could anyone help me please.

the fuel lines are hooked up properly. from pipe to fuel tank to engine?
carb is set to factory settings?

have u tried starting the motor off the car?

I've double checked the fuel lines and i have swapped them around which has stopped the leaking. How do i check if the carb is set to factory?

I have tried to unflood the engine etc but just doesn't wanna start!!!!! i am going crazy..

no i haven't tried starting the engine off the car..

Just getting really annoyed. last day and a half just been trying to get the damn thing started

btw everytime i flood the engine it the pull works fine but as soon as i tighten the glow plug on it becomes hard again?

the fuel coming out of the pipe is most likely from you trying to start it and it not starting. When you crank the engine the fuel was flowing through the engine and since it wasn't igniting it was coming out the exhaust. This means the fuel lines were hooked up right to begin with. line should run from the exhaust to the fuel tank (usually into the lid of the tank) and then one from the fuel tank to the carb on the engine (this line usually originates at a much lower point on the fuel tank than the presure line coming from the exhaust).

Usually when mine acts like that its because my glow plug has gone bad and the fuel isnt combusting. Try taking out you glow plug and testing it on your glow ignitor to see if the coil inside glows red hot. If it doesn't then you either have a bad plug or your glow starter isnt working. You can either check your glow starter with a voltmeter or try it on a brand new glow plug and see if it works there.

Is this a used RC or is it new? If its used do you know for a fact that it was running properly before you bought it?

As for the factory motor specs you can find that in the manual for that engine or if its the stock engine that comes in that kit from the factory then it should be listed in manual for the kit. If you bought it used and didnt get any manuals then you should be able to get PDF versions of the manuals from the manufacturers website.

the glow plug lights but not RIGHT to the end of that makes sense. there is one last coil that doesn't light but the rest of it does.

It is a brand new engine and car.

Hmmm, your manual will tell you all factory settings for your rigs engine & carb, also, you MAY be using a plug thats too short not allowing the combustion of the fuel to the plug, or you may be running a "cold" plug which may not be getting hot enough to spark (depending if its winter there)

Thats all I can think of, hope this helps

On another note, depending where you are in the world, if it's cold outside, it will be hard to start a nitro. If it's cold where you are, preheat the engine with a hair dryer, or bring the car inside so it can warm up for an hour or so and then try to start it. If it's a new engine, it will prolly also take time until it's broken in to get it running reliably.

If teh car and engine is new then I would assume he is using the plug that came in the engine and therefore is using the correct length of plug. Thats assuming this was an RTR. As for the tip of it not heating that is common to a degree the very end of the coil wont glow like the middle does.

Is it cold where you are? it can be really difficult to start a nitro engine in really cold weather and get it up to running temp. May explain why it started inside and not outside?

Also, if you have the time prior to running, set your rig on top of a floor heater vent, or a wood burning stove/fireplace to warm all the components up because you just dont knwo. Not to close though just to get the rig warmed up. I also let the nitro get at LEAST room temp before I run.

Can't say, just what I have read works. I know that with my truck, if it's cold, it's a bear to start. Basically, it won't fire until the glow plug has warmed the engine which takes a lot. If I bring the truck inside and let it sit until it's at room temp (72 at my house), then it fires up easy. Problem is that takes time, I think last time I let it sit in the house for a few hours. I would imagine that if you use a hair dryer and let it warm the block until it's very warm to the touch, it should turn over nicely. On the flip side, if it's a new engine with a really tight pinch, warming the engine will help out because it will help expand the piston sleeve. I've never done it as I am also relatively new to nitro, but have learned a lot surfing the web, and reading everything I can find about issues that may concern me.

Engines are simple. Fuel, air, spark (or glow in this case) and compression. If you have all four, it should start, or pop at least. Nitro engines are even easier.

You obviously have compression, so no need to worry about that.

Go through and do this:

1) Check that the glow plug is heating. Shove it in the end of the starter and look. It should glow bright red, and a touch of smoke might come off it. If it doesn't do that, the plug or the starter is dead - charge\replace.

2) Set the needles to factory setup. the manual should tell you what this is.

3) Makes sure your fuel lines are definitely right. The one on the exhaust goes to the top of the tank, and the one on the carb goes to the bottom of the tank.

4) Check the engine temp by hand, if it feels cold to touch, warm it up a bit, as previously mentioned, till it feels pretty warm.

5) Check that there is fuel getting to the cylinder. While the plug is out, spin the engine up a few times, with your thumb over the carby. It should start spitting fuel out the top of the head. If it does that, take you thumb off the carb, and spin it a few more times, to clear it out a bit.

6) Providing the glow plug is heating, stick it back in, and try and start it. It should start, or fart at least. If it farts, lean off the low speed needle a quarter turn and try again. Failing that, lean off another quarter turn and try again. Dont lean it off any more than that.

7) By now it should of started. If it hasn't, write an unpleasant email to Kyosho, detailing the lack in quality of there products, then proceed by throwing the car through the front window, of the shop you bought it from.

8) If that doesn't get it started. Find the person who sold it to you, and get them to start it. They are obliged to help.

A tip for you:
Ignore step 7, and when ripping on the pull start, pull it out till you feel it lock in, then give it a rip. This will make sure the sprag bearing lasts a little longer. :) Giving it a little bit of throttle will help the engine to breathe a little, and get some air in the mixture. Just make sure you dont rev it once its started, otherwise you'll defeat the purpose of breaking it in.

haven't tried yet but appreciate the response! Will let you guys know as soon as i get home from work and give it a go

EDIT: I may record what I'm doing and post it, so you guys can see if I'm doing anything wrong.

try a SMALL amount if gasoline. it has -45 f flash point, nitro flash point 95 f. thats why its hard to start.

Pull the plug and turn the truck upside down. Pull the starter several times until fuel stops pouring out.
