So for a while there after changing the gear ratio in my Backslash to 20T pinion & 50T spur I was able to get a top speed of 74mph. That was before my bad Traxxas battery and charger catastrophe. Now I still have same gears that are in good shape, a new 3S battery, new HOTA charger, and even have 2 high speed cooling fans (motor & ESC) now and for some reason I can't get it past 55-57 no matter how fresh a charge. What could it be? Motor or ESC wearing out? Wheel bearings? Differentials? Where should I start? Help please!

I was also going to mention outdoor conditions changeing. Weather conditions can make a big difference. Different tire compounds are made for different outdoor temps.

Whats the new battery mah and C rating vs the old one? What connector are you using? Also, depending on weather like the others said, a cold battery isnt able to discharge as fast. Thats why you'll see speed run and no prep guys heat theirs up in an electric lunch box.

I got the HOTA D6 Pro and a 3S 100C rated battery. My last battery was Traxxas 3S 50C, but that was the one that quit charging cuz it had a bad cell in it. Do you think the 20/50 gearing is killing the motor? It's gone into thermal overload shut down at least 20 times too

When it hit 74mph did it run ok through that entire pack? Did you run it after that? I mean, how many packs did it run through hitting those kind of speeds?

If that was the first and only time it hit those speeds, I would suspect you might have overheated the ESC, motor, or wiring. If it ran good a few times after that before your battery died, It could just be a bind somewhere in the drivetrain. But having that battery go bad, the recent gear change, and the thermal shutdowns it sounds more like you have some electronic problems.

Regardless of what it might be, I would start tearing it down. Start with removing the pinion. Check the drivetrain by rotating the spur to see if it feel like it's in a bind. For it to slow the car down that much, if it was a drivetrain issue, you would definitely feel some resistance trying to rotate the spur. If it feels smooth, I wouldn't get in an immediate hurry to check the motor or ESC. You could have simply melted your battery connector a bit, or weakened a solder joint due to that battery going bad and being tasked to deliver more amperage to the ESC than it can handle. So check your cables real quick.

Another question
When it hit 74mph, did it take long to get there? Did it have a lot of power on takeoff? Or did you notice it was slow on launch?

It took off like a screaming banshee all the way. I have to progressively pull the throttle or it will try to stand up the whole way. Hence my homemade wheelie bar

And no it didn't run good the whole way. I can get 3-5 good speed runs back n forth in the parking lot and then you can notice it slowing down until thermal shut down. Gravel or dirt takes maybe 5min for thermal SD

Thermal shutdown or is your battery hitting LVC? What battery did you get?

Do you have an infrared temp gun? You need to see what temps you're hitting. Anytime you change gears or tire diameter you need to check temps. If you're hitting thermal shutdown you need to find out why. It sounds more like LVC, like maybe your battery has some voltage sag. But not enough info to know for sure.

Is it a stock Traxxas VXL system we're talking about here?

How do you know it's thermal shutdown?

What is your battery voltage at immediately following the run?

What battery did you buy to replace the Traxxas battery? I see 3S 100C, but specifically what battery? It's not significantly smaller (physically) than the old one, right?

Oh no. Same size if not a hair bigger. Here's the new one. Traxxas battery was a 4200mah 50C I think

I believe Traxxas lipo packs are 25c so this battery is a big upgrade as far as charge/discharge rate.

I'm watching the battery temps on the app. Shuts off at like 165° if I'm not mistaken. I do have a thermal laser on my NCV pen tester I can read it with tho. I'll get back to you with that number later today

Are you sure you have a temp sensor on the battery? That temp seems WAY to high.

Can you screenshot the data?
