about 11-12 years ago I had bought a traxxas slash 2wd and had modified it a bunch at least as much as I could at 13ish. I had eventually sorta broke the esc while racing it one night and never touched it again as I couldn’t afford to fix it. Now a decade later I want to try to get back into the hobby and i’m thinking of doing short course trucks with 4wd this time.

Only problems I have is i’m not sure what to get or if I should do buggy, I also seem to have a hard time finding any dirt tracks near me in south jersey so that also seems to be a challenge for getting back into this. Any suggestions on cars would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome back to RCT and welcome back to the hobby!

Here is a couple of track finders and see if you can find any tracks near you. I would also check around on Facebook as that is a good place for more local places which are not well known.

Now with getting either a short course or a buggy, what I generally say, is I go with whatever your local track runs the most.

I personally have a slash 2wd, and a 4wd buggy (B74.1D)

4wd SCTs:
Tekno SCT410.3 (older discontinued)
Tekno SCT410 SL (based off of 10th scale chassis, lightweight)
Tekno SCT410 2.0 (based off of a 8th scale chassis, a bit on the heavy side)
Losi / TLR SCTE 1.0, 2.0, 3.0s (discontinued)

4wd buggies:
10th scale:
Associated B64, B74, or latest B74.2
Losi 22x4
Xray XB4
Schumacher cat l1 evo
Tekno EB410.2

8th scale:
Tekno EB48 2.1
Losi XE
Associated RC8B4.1e

For tracks, the ones I know that are up there are Wagner park (on-road) which I believe is currently closed. Rhythm RC. The ones I know that my buddies go to personally is Bryan davies in port deposit MD, and Pit Stop hobbies.

Welcome.

If you're racing in sanctioned events, the models which will be competitive are going to be different from those that will just put a smile on your face at the local park or skate-park.

If you have the racing affliction, then first find a track, next see what classes they run, after that see what the A-main drivers are running, and then decide.

the one track I found I called they have 4x4 short course trucks i’ll have to see what’s more popular or just start something maybe not many race and then collect other cars from there

port deposit is a decent drive about an hour and half from me now, back when I had my slash here at my dads house I went to mushroom bowl a few times but didn’t like the community they weren’t welcoming to a new person i’ll have to see they run at that track and a few others and thank you for car suggestions!

Welcome. The short course truck craze from 2008 or so has pretty much died. The models available today are a hang over from that era. That said, they’re still good fun to drive and very capable. As other have said, if you’re determined to race, check out what classes the local are racing and the more popular brands. If not racing, then pick the one you like the most with easy access to parts.

it seems some tracks near by run 4x4 sct along with buggy’s and truggys though it doesn’t seem to be as popular but it could be a good starting point plus I like the style of them

what truck do you have?
SCTs? I have Tekno's SCT410.3, SCT410SL, and SCT410 2.0 rides. I had a few SC10s for awhile, but quickly moved to the 4wd side of things after driving the SCT410SL for the first time.

Take a look at Associated's Pro 4 SC-10... it is a pretty good bargain for an entry-level SCT.

I don't race these days, but I doubt, given equal driver skill, it will be competitive with the A-Main cars, but again, find out what classes they run, there may be a class for those who run for fun, and don't want to spend big for a little trophy. :hehe:
