Hi I’m new here. Would really like to get into drifting I was told Tt-02 was a good place to start. I’d like something I can upgrade. I also was looking at rtr drift cars, but know what I know about other sports like airsoft if you buy something cheap you can always upgrade or change anything. Pls help me start, and not waste my money buying something that I’ll be unhappy with. I watched a video about the tt-02d that was a rx7 that made a lot of good points. But I’d like to have a 240sx body like when drifting became popular. Suggestions? Please, and thank you in advance!

Do not buy a TT-02. It’s not worth the headache of doing the 2wd conversion. Most tracks won’t allow 4wd drift cars. I’d highly recommend looking at the yokomo YD and RD RTRs, MST RMX 2.5 RTR, and a Reve D RDX. They’re your most bang for your buck RTR drift rigs. You can find body everywhere, painted or not painted. I’ve been in the drift scene for a few months now and I’m loving it. Do some more research and find out what works best for you. I personally started with a MST RMX 2.5 brushless RTR

Tt02s are horrible for drifting. Even for bashing or racing too. 100 percent agree with what @AjDale said above. A proper 2wd MST or yokomo or even redcat would be better than a tt02. Had one myself and yea, I hated it. Don't want someone stepping into the same shoes of problems I had with that chassis.

Sure, TTs, Tamiya does sell alot of them, but people get them because they're cheap but not that great on the performance aspect. Really good on the display side due to it being scale, but not performance. Plastic geared diffs that can strip out at any moment, sloppy suspension parts. Plastic bushings/inserts, why didn't they include bearings to begin with? Steering rack sticks to one side and makes the car uncontrollable to drive, ect. Could throw over 600 dollhairs into a Tamiya and it will still not be good as a lower end MST. Just my 2 cents. Ask @WickedFog he done it before.

Ok I saw the stuff at the bottom. I didn’t realize this kit is pretty much just the chassis with not a whole lot on it. It’s expensive for not a whole lot on it. I will also need a battery I’m sure

The RD 2.0 is a significantly good chassis that’s worth the price. I would say you’re better off searching for a RTR. Kits aren’t very beginner friendly. You will absolutely need a shorty 2s lipo battery.

Aj is quickly brcoming our resident drift guru. So he will keep you on the right track.

I built an MST RMX 2.0 kit a few months ago, which is our only drift car, and I've yet to get it going (too many projects ahead of it. But it seems like a pretty decent entry level kit, and was a really fun build. If you want to jump in buildung one, the newer MST kits are pretty cheap.

The Yokomo stuff is what you see all the racers using though from what I have seen. So yeah, they're gonna be pricey. But they come with a lot better components in them, with a lot more adjustability.

@AjDale - didn't you start with an MST RMX 2.5? I am curious how the MST stuff is to drive because I am thinking of grabbing a 2.5 kit as well later on to use as our entry level drifter for bashing around outside on a concrete slab. I am thinking about turning the 2.0 into that F4Drifty with the CEN 450 body 😜

Theoretically you can take out the center diff and replace it with something that delivers the same power to the front and then take out your axles going from the front diff to the wheels. Lock your rear diff and you have a drift car 🤷‍♂️
Aside from the fact that your front wheels won't turn near far enough to make a good drift car, the front/rear balance and weight distribution will be way, way off, and as such will be a terrible driving car on a drift track - Yeah. You're right 😜

The RMX 2.0 kit is pretty good. It does have a different transmission setup than the 2.5 though, making the 2.5 a bit more favorable. I really enjoy building all the kits! Directions have always been on point for me. But beginner friendly just start off RTR and go from there, worth spending the extra to get a decent first drift rig and be able to enjoy it rather than constantly tinkering with it.

That would be sweet to build a cen body drift truck. I’ve seen a few and they always look good! The RMX 2.5 is awesome! Out of the box it performs. I’d recommend some yeah racing adjustable links for sure. Then slowly upgrade electronics if that’s what you’re into I’d personally start with the gyro and servo.

Just bought another drift build…. Stay tuned for more pics as it’s a wild one🤤👀

I know what it says. I saw that list. But is there anything else I might need. Oil or anything for shocks.

The Yokomo kit generally comes with the shock oil for their base build setups they offer in manuals. As far as the Yokomo's lineage compared to MST's, they have been at the drift game LONG before MST was. For the longest time the cost of replacement parts from MST hurt them considerably. Yokomo has ALWAYS been one of the pricier chassis out there but considering if you built the kits as they suggested in their very easy to understand and well thought out manuals you had a very capable car. Their baseline setups were always pretty drivable.
