I am looking ahead to next season & 1/8 electric buggy outdoor racing here in Colorado.

Is anyone aware of product updates that might be in the pipeline from the major brands over the winter/spring worth looking for?

Just checking…
Thanks.

HB just released their Worlds Edition and it's a game changer:
https://www.absolutehobbyz.com/hb-r...etition-electric-buggy-without-bodyshell.html

I just got my kit and will be assembling it over the coming weeks and will be selling my E819RS soon
Thank you.
Considering this buggy will be used for racing, not bashing, this is the type of buggy I am interested to learn more about.
A friend has a Tekno EB48 2.1 and is pointing me in that direction.
One of the local tracks (MHOR R/C) mentioned Associated first, but that was a very short conversation as I wasn't seriously considering a race buggy at the time.

Again - Thank you.
....More homework for me before a selection is made.

Cool, I have a build/review on the E819RS here:
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?4192321-BUILD-REVIEW-HB-Racing-E819RS

The tips and instruction for the build are going to be extremely similar sans the slough of upgrades made to the World's Edition. I'll be starting a new thread once I begin the build on my new kit.

I also have build/reviews on the TEKNO EB482.0 here:
https://www.teknoforums.com/threads/build-review-eb48-2-0.1864/

And the Caster ETO821 here:
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?4322447-BUILD-REVIEW-Caster-ETO821

HB Racing suits me the best, it tends to be the most forgiving and can handle the widest range of driving conditions without having to change much to my setup when I visit various tracks across the country. TEKNO and Caster are almost as durable as HB, but they tend to be a pinch more expensive to maintain based on my race log. Not saying HB is bullet proof, but the costs to keep my HB going just isn't quite as expensive.

I raced the TEKNO first, then went to HB, then went to Caster and eventually back to HB where I feel that HB provides me the perfect balance between budget, performance and support.

Side note, I tend to prefer designs that offer a C-Hub which offers more stability on corner exit. A pivot ball design tends to be "snappy" and I get more rotation than I prefer with most pivot ball designs. If I were to go with a pivot ball I would go with SWorkz because their geometry is extremely similar to HB but SWorkz uses a pivot ball instead of a C-Hub.

Most other pivot ball designs also use saddle packs which require extra care and maintenance explained here:
https://www.smc-racing.net/index.php?route=product/category&path=166

This is the main reason I prefer to stay away from saddle packs (TLR, AE, XRay, etc..)

Good Luck on your decision!

i need a racing buggy. i just wish there was one that didnt cost over 500$ (including the innards)

Caster is about the least expensive RTR that you can get that is actually race worthy out of the box for $529:
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?4322447-BUILD-REVIEW-Caster-ETO821

Main reason I ditched my Caster was because it wasn't as competitive as my HB on high grip conditions. It needs a few upgrades, and is extremely competitive on low grip for sure! It's not a unicorn, so you need to understand that there are some kinks to work out as I've explained in my thread, but for the price you get a lot of bang for the buck.

I personally prefer to spend the extra money to get a higher quality product from HB.

reality check... 1/8 racing is VERY expensive... after race fees and a set of tires, expect to pay $100 per day on consumables... $529 is a drop in the bucket compared to the operating costs to be a competitive racer.

who said i wanted to be competitive? if i wanted to, id just buy cheapo and make everybody mad.

i guess i dont need a racer. maybe a typhon 6s will do me well.

Yup, I've seen many Typhon's show up and race perfectly fine, they are great entry level cars, but they are very dated platforms that are based on Team Durango designs but lack many upgrades that once existed from Durango. They now offer a TLR Tuned option, but I would go with Caster which has far more modern geometry.

Note that the TLR Tuned Typhon is a roller for $420 which will be more expensive than the RTR Caster for $529:

Another ding for me with the Typhon is that they are pivot balls and they tend to crack and pop out, be sure to buy lots of steering blocks :(

Thanks for the info bill_delong, I'm planning on building a ebuggy this winter. I hadn't thought about the HB, maybe because the local hobby stores/tracks around me don't carry them. Was leaning towards the tekno but haven't ruled out the tlr and mugen. But I would perfer to stay away from the pillow ball suspension, which keeps taking me back to the tekno. I will say my 1/10 tlr rc's came setup out of the box better than my tekno sct, finally getting the sct dialed in.

i dont really need a racer. i guess a typhon will do me. maybe there is an "un pivot ball" kit for new steering blocks. i guess there is only one way to find out :)

TEKNO is a solid option too, if you have lots of TEKNO drivers in your area then you'll get better support in terms of setup help and parts which is more important. While my experience is with the 2.0 TEKNO, they have addressed some of my concerns(#2,#3 and #5 below) with the 2.1 release, I've listed my concerns here:

Part of the inspiration for the original post was the fact the 1/8 TLR buggy has been out for a few years. I am wondering if they might have a freshened up version coming?
@bill_delong has mentioned brands that weren't even on my radar: HB & Castor for example.
Also, Bill...thanks for highlighting the saddle pack design element that some include. Despite my lack of racing experience, I am in agreement with you. The saddle pack setup is probably something I will avoid.

There are many racers in my area who have no issues with saddle pack designs, they are comfortable with the extra maintenance necessary, though I see more battery dumps in a main from saddle packs than traditional 4S packs... if you decide to run saddle then you need to stay on top of your battery health and replace your packs sooner than you typically would with a 4S pack.

I race alongside several TLR guys and they are very fast too!

Follow up post!

The opportunity presented itself, so I pulled the trigger and ordered a Tekno EB48 2.1.

So far, only the motor/esc have been ordered. It’ll run a Hobbywing XR8 PRO G3 Combo Xerun 4268SD G3 1900kv motor.

Decisions need to be made for:
Servo
Transmitter/receiver
4s battery

Suggestions for rounding out the system are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Good times to be had!

I just got my eb48 2.1, still building it. I’m going with a protek 170 tbl servo and gensacearespammers 6000 mah battery(on sale at a main).
Also added the -2mm bulkhead setup front and back. And going to try the .3 Ackerman and steering bell.
