Driving my kid to school the other day and it drove by..

Looked like a fresh (ish) build. It went by so fast but I managed to get my phone out and get a quick pic. Only stand out thing besides it being gorgeous was I could see modern racing buckets through the windshield.

That thing is sweet!

"Herbie replica" didn't sound appealing to me at first. Then I saw the photo. And the 200HP. Sweet! :thumbs-up:
Gotta put a Porsche motor in them. Now you're talking.

Yeah, At first i didn't know 200+hp custom VW based motors existed but i bet he scoots with kind of power this guy also has a Marty Mcfly Toyota pickup and Season 3\4 Kitt from Knight Rider.

200+ hp out of an air cooled VW is getting pretty easy these days. the guys that race "Real Street" (street legal cars on pump gas that have to complete a cruise before every event) are in the 250+ range CARBURATED (worked over 48 IDA Webers sometimes hogged out to 51.5). doing wheelies and capable of 6.90's in the 1/8.

then you have psycopaths like Steve Dalton who make 500+ with a turbo EFI set up. and yes this car is street legal and street driven, he's done Hot Rod Drag Week and other Drag and Drive events with it.

For me, I'd love to have and build my own Herbie replica based on the Herbie goes to Monte Carlo version. Also i'd probably do a few upgrades to the stock motor or upgrade to a fast motor like what this guy did.

We used to race at Barona Dragway with these guys.
The fastest VWs I have ever seen.
INSANE FAST CARS!!! 🤯😍😎

Sure as shiit ain’t legal in Commiefornia.. 🙄🤣

surprisingly
Steve Dalton is from CA (at least i think he still lives here). and the car is registered, insured and street driven.
most of the cars the Real Street video are CA cars and have to be registered, insured and street driven. i haven't watched it all the way through yet, but its probably safe to assume they're all 1967 and older.
1975 and older vehicles are(currently) smog exempt in CA. shocker i know. so it's all kind of legal until a cop wants to be an a-hole and/or cause problems. but LA and surrounding counties have what's called the Street Racing Task Force. they mostly exist to harass newer vehicles for "illegal" mods (any engine mod that doesn't have a CARB cert sticker on it). they tend to leave vehicles without an OBD port of some kind alone (...at least for now...)

Sure. But if CA can't regulate it they want to crush it don't they?
no they want to regulate it. crushing it would be one less thing they have dominion over. how are they going to jerk you around and control you with it if you don't have it?
seriously though, they have gone after people for putting LS engines in classic cars, fines, emissions requirements, requiring smog testing. put a 350 in your 55 Chevy and they can't touch you (yet). put an LS in there and they demand catalytic convers and PCV's and all kinds of 💩.

It's the reason i'm glad i live in Oklahoma and have for almost all of my life. Someday me and my family plan to move to Arizona in the Tucson area in the next few years hopefully it won't effect my current hobbies in any bad way. My pretend full size car wrenching hobby will never change since it's all in my mind.

Also if i were rich, had the skill and was fortunate to find one i'd also build a Giselle (from Herbie goes to Monte Carlo) replica out of one of these. 1976 Lancia Scorpion.

This is what she looked like (btw this one is the last surviving screen used car from the movie).

Just without gullwing doors 🤣, but it's a lot rarer also was made earlier. The reason Disney picked that car for Herbie goes to Monte Carlo was a product placement for Lancia to sell the Scorpion in America. And since it's a cute little Italian sports car for Herbie's first girlfriend and i really like how it looks.
