i used to see them used as taxi's usually in more upscale area's. they weren't super common but it wasn't weird when you saw one. then they disappeared. went years without seeing one. now they seem to pop up in this one lower income area inhabited by middle eastern people and Asians. and there's a 50/50 shot at it having a handicap license plate.
it's just weird that that intersection seems to be some kind of hub for them. go one more main street north (the direction I'm pointing in that pic) and you'll never see one. go an intersection south and you might see one. go another intersection south and you won't see one. go an intersection east and you'll see them. one more intersection east and you wont. go an intersection west and you won't. it's like what is it about that area? why are they there and nowhere else? and why always driven by middle eastern people?

There might be a shop that specializes in them now near you.
We have one that does old VW vanagons and buses. Another that specializes in Saab and Mini Coopers.
Weird stuff for Maine IMO.

idk maybe. they never seem to be being driven by service tech though. you'd think id see one of them driving one. 3 of the ones iv seen recently were being driven my middle age middle eastern women.

id figure a Vanagon or late bay window bus would be a good vehicle in Maine. outdoorsy type people like them cause you can camp out of them. and some of those Vanagons are 4wd and quite capable off road. from what i gather there are a lot of hippie types there as well. (or is that a stereotype?)

Last several months, I've started seeing a bunch of full size 4x4 trucks with bright wheel well lights. Lifted trucks. I saw 5 tonight, recording this video of a screech owl, I guess down in the woods.

Actually, there are a LOT of Trump signs in ppls yards, still. Not all hippies but a LOT of hunters and campers, fishing and kayaking etc... a LOT of outdoors activities where a 4x4 camper could be a nice thing to have.

Hippies too tho.

A lot of GrubHub delivery drivers too.

Years ago, outside looking at the stars, It was REAL dark and a perfect night to watch the skys. (lyrid meteor shower this week. )
I caught a recording of an owl hooting away on my cell.
I played it back a few times. In the dark and pretty much silent woods in NH, the owl had swooped down and was on a railing about 10' away!!!
Keep in mind... those suckers are BIG!!! About 9' tall if my memory is right!
They fly SILENTLY TOO. No wing noise.
I turned and made out that silhouette and scared God, his kid, all his friends and a few ppl I never heard of before... ALL right out of me!!! Holy SH!T did that flip me out!!!
The owl must have thought I was a complete @sshole freaking out like Jerry Lewis in the pitch dark on my porch at 2am, prob a full 30 seconds or so after it landed! I was totally oblivious!

overpriced yes. especially the 4wd ones. parts availability isn't really an issue anymore, they're getting to be like the earlier busses where practically everything is remanufactured. there are clubs, social media groups, and web forums dedicated to them so it's pretty easy to find what you need. finding a mechanic on the other hand... there in a dead zone. air cooled mechanics can sometimes work on them but its usually a fallow the manual job. water cooled mechanics won't touch them. idk anything on the east coast but i know of 2 maybe 3 on the west coat that specialize in them. ones in the San Jose area, the other is in the Portland area (i think) and iv heard of one mainly specializes in busses that also works on them in the Sacramento area.
they're in gaining popularity.

Saw a new Dodge all General Lee'd up, but traffic wasn't cooperating, barely got the front end. After I put the camera away, a Chrome wrapped Lamborghini went by, and right behind that was an old Volkswagon Bug with about 5 full size plastic skeletons stuck to the outside of it. I was starting to wonder if Mrs. Doom slipped something in my breakfast.

There was a story not to long ago about two Mexican nationals in the US being caught with a large amount of ammo in a minivan but someone calculated the weight of said ammo and concluded that the typical minivan couldn't bare the load.
