Hello people.

I’m hoping to get some advice/ recommendations on buying my first crawler.

It’s been over 30 years since I built my last kit (Schumacher nitro 10) and I’ve had the rc itch since winter.

I see there are dozens of different brands of crawlers ranging in size, price and capability. This is what I’m looking for in a crawler, 1/10 scale, durable, coil sprung, good parts availability, 2 speed transmission might be cool but not really a deal breaker.
I’m leaning towards a RTR kit since I’m way out of the loop when it comes to modern electronics.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the site.
Assuming you mean a trail tryck and not die hard crawler........

I used to really love axial scx10 line. I have a scx10ii and love it with great parts supply and aftermarket following. Since being bought out by horizon they discontinue cars quick.

With that said id look at traxxas trx4. I own alot of traxxas products but the trx4 isn't one. It has a good parts supply and following also.

Whats your budget?

Welcome!

I agree with @Chubaka on trx4. I do have a little bias since I own one. It was my first 1/10 crawler I purchased when I got back into rc myself. I almost would classify it more a trail truck. It can be pretty quick (which I love) since I do more trail than crawl. It's done well crawling too. The ESC has multiple settings to dial what type of driveability you want too. LOTS of aftermarket upgrades too, like Axial.

Have you thought about your expectations?

What kind of terrain do you have to run on?

There are so many choices out there!
It would help us out a lot to know if you're thinking about something you can put some accessories on and have a scale-good time.
Or are you looking for something that has more climbing capability in exchange for some scale looks.

Thanks for the reply’s!
You’ll have to forgive my terminology since I’m still playing catch up. I have a bunch of walking trails in our neighborhood (about 7 miles total with a mix gravel/dirt plus a couple of creeks) I'm looking for a mix of trail/crawling but leaning more towards crawling.

My total budget is $800 including a battery and charger.

Thanks again

Welcome! The Axial line is a good place to be as others have mentioned. My scx10 iii coyote has been a great truck, and depending on how you set it up will depend on if it better for trailing or crawling. Mine is going towards a crawler, with added weights etc. My Element Enduro trail runner has been an awesome trail truck. Parts availability appears weaker than other brands, but the amount of direct interchange with axial parts kind of cancels that out.

Id recommend the Trx4 as well or just about anything by Vanquish. The Axial Capra is a great capable crawler as well with a huge parts following.

The Trx4 was my first crawler as well. I have 3 now and they get the most use. They are incredibly durable and the 2spd trans and selectable diffs add another level of fun. But they do have downsides. Mainly the poor quality factory electronics.

Vanquish makes crawlers to outperform most other RTR's and are a bit pricey but definately have the quality to make them worth the expense.

The Axial Capra is currently the most capable crawler I have. The durability is there and lots of aftermarket hop ups but its a rock crawler, not a trail truck.

Don't let the new electronics scare you off from building something. If you can make those nitro motors run right, you can figure out brushless and lipo. Plenty of information on this forum to get you up to speed and plenty of friendly guys here to guide you along the way.

Thats a great budget, lots of good options in that price range. My personal opinion would be a vanquish stance the axial coyote would be another solid choice. Both would do great on trails and excel at crawling. I do not have any experience with the axial truck but reviews seem very positive. As for the vanquish truck I have a vrd carbon and mullet, both kits I built. The stance is based off the carbon and shares the same design and most of the parts. Stance is rtr and is very capable. Hope that helps you.

Welcome to the asylum 😁

1/10 scale crawlers are where it's at. Tons of great options out there. What are your goals?
Traxxas, FMS, Vanquish, Redcat, Cross RC
Are all great options with tons of aftermarket.
I'm a big FMS fan, great bang for the buck and one of the best if you like the scale look.
Everything pictured is FMS.

bro youve opened up a can of worms here... 800? you can get so many, almost consider that too many options lol,
time for my 2 cents.
my favorite is my element ecto, (the only element i recomend typically) twas my first truck and has taken more abuse than any average 4 crawlers combined and still rips the lines. lots of aftermarket upgrades available. ( i recently built a comp fox, really similar but more capable)

scx10 - awesome trucks amazing aftermarket support, my sons basecamp is one of the toughest most durable trucks we have.

redcat- the ascent and apex are amazing, the others not so much, not the worst but their gonna leave you wanting for more ( id suggest getting a redcat after you have others, as in MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE they arent the most capable other than the ascent platform.

vanquish- man their stuff is sweet, its the brand snobs brand of choice, its the priciest, it shows others you're "more serious about crawling than they are" but its also one of the top brands, not just because of that but because they are really well designed.

ANY of these will fall under the 800 mark, leaving you room for : aluminum beadlocks, brass, tires wheels, shocks, possibly a better servo or motor (hobbywing quickrun fusion pro for the win) then you're gonna want a new body, maybe decide you want a tow rig attatchment, in my experience most parts online are geared to the scx10 platform, everyone makes stuff for that.

an example of aftermarket availability: go try to find a tow boom, the one i got was for the scx10 ii, but its on my redcat ascent.... its MOSTLY compatible, but try to find one specifically for the trx4 platform, now it just got harder... they all have brass upgrades across the market, but when you start looking for specifics thats where the differences pop up, the trx4 is wider than the scx10 so my boom while it would fit the scx and the redcat wouldnt fit the trx4, even tho it says "Compatible Brand: Any Brand" little things like that lead to learning a new aspect of the hobby,
but say you want a light kit? universal, theyll about go on any vehicle, super interchangeable. but you want a steel bumper? now you're looking fr a brand specific item if you want proper fitment.

sometimes you gotta try em all, their like danged ol pokemans man lol, everyone has an opinion on the best, but to me the best is whatever I'm driving or building lol,

i ramble a lot.
if you go with an element, axial, redcat or traxxas, you're gonna dig it, but its a gateway truck you gotta understand this above all else. its not likely to be your last, so dont stress it as much,

also consider your terrain!! super important!! if you're driving thru the woods with lots of leaf litter and branches, well a lcg (low center gravity) truck wouldnt be as ideal as say a hightrail or something similar, my ecto is a belly dragger, super low cg, fll droop shocks, made to stay low and planted as i crest rocks. i get stuck in spots my sons basecamp just rips right over cause of those additional 2 inches of clearance he has, he glides right over the top of stuff thats getting in my way. BUUUUT when we approach steep angles the ecto shines because its generally more planted, sidehilling? the ecto trucks on while the basecamp (having a higher cg) has a harder time with the body and higher cg working to roll the truck sideways.
all of this can be adjusted to a point, but may be worth considering.

the redcat and basecamp both trail better than my ecto, but my ecto rock crawls better than them both. its a fun competition between the trucks to see which is the BEST that day lol.

look forward to seeing what you get bro

And Vanquish just released their brushless 2.2 H10 Optic and for the money you can't get a much better starter rig

i dig it too bro, wish the budget would allow for a purchase like that lol,
at BTC my son and i got in with an h10 optic group running a trail. SO capable.10/10 would recomend.. and i DO love me some big ol hoonkin 2.2 tires, crawls over everaythang

You have lots to choose from, honestly pick a body you like and go from there. Do you have a local hobby store or mostly purchasing from online? Sounds like your trails are lovely.

In no particular order Traxxas (sport-high trail editions), Element (gatekeeper (if you can find one), Etco), Vanquish (H10, vs4-10, stance), Axial (10.3), Redcat (ascent).

Your “out of the loop” you are not far off even from 30 years ago. Stick with lithium batteries (they are safe) and a dual battery charger.

In any of those vehicles LiPo’s in 3s 2200mah batteries are good to have and will fit all the vehicles. And a D300 or Hitec rdx2 for a charger.

Whatever you choose welcome to another addiction and have fun wheeling!

☝️ Totally agree with picking a body style you like and go from there. With your budget, you really can not go wrong with any of the above mentioned rigs. Sometimes it just boils down to looks with your first rig.
Also be patient for Fathers Day weekend, you might be able to find a sweet sale.

Might you want a kit and assemble yourself? That would lend to selecting your own electronics. Plus the enjoyment of building it yourself 😉
