So I'm interested in building an off-road Rally car, from scratch, no kit. I enjoy the build process and always loved the rally look.

My idea is very much in its infancy and will take time to complete, but I'll get there! I'm calling this my Let's get Nerdy build, because I'm also planning to track parts, costs, etc (I love excel spreadsheets). I can post these too so folks can see what a scratch build would ultimately cost. My goal of course is to keep costs down wherever possible.

For starters, I've begun looking at the body shell(s) I like and marrying that with a chassis.

I've narrowed it down to these two bodies:
  1. HPI 1/12 scale BMW 2002
    1. 225mm wheelbase, 200mm width
  2. Tamiya Audi A2 Quattro
    1. I believe is 257mm wheelbase.
I'm leaning toward the 2002. I love all the lights on the Audi, so If I can wire in additional grill lights to the 2002, I'd be thrilled.

With that idea in mind, I'm looking at the LC Racing EMB-RA chassis, it's a 225mm wheelbase with 190mm, so by numbers alone it should work.

If I go with the Quattro body, then I was considering the Traxxas 4tec 2.0 or a Tamiya VX01 chassis.

I want this to be an off-road specific rally build so I'd like to figure out how to get a little more clearance than the stock cars and of course more off-roady tires 😎.

I've only done a kit build previously, so this would be the next level for me to figure out all the parts needed.

Again, It'll take some time (as funds are available), so bear with me there...

If you need a 257mm chassis, the ONLY car that will do would be an Optima Mid!!! 😍😎😁
The Optima mid would likely give the clearance I want. It's on the list :)

@CertifiedMike if I went optima mid for a chassis, you think I could find some shorter suspension links to bring the tires closer to the body? Also how is motor height on those? Just thinking about clearances with the body. Should be fine with the Quattro (I'd think)

You want to make it more narrow across the front and rear?
How wide do you want it to be?
There might be options. 🤔
The TF chassis is the same wheel base but much more narrow.
Its also 4x4 and would make a KILLER rally car BUT it needs belt guards and covers made for it. Its really an onroad chassis where rocks aren't a concern. 😉

That TF wheel width is more on par with the rally look. If I can, I'd like to build this thing up as a 4x4 🤩. I've been trying to find the body width of the Quattro, but no luck yet.

I bought that chassis with all the carbon fiber etc on fleabay for under $200. 😉
They are all different prices because they are all slightly different. This one is supposed to be a TF3 R chassis.
Its also got the ride height screws down.
I'd guess another 1/4-1/2" ride height is avail.
They are so cool AND 4X4!!! 😎😁

I am unsure, I am at work at the moment, but I may have to measure the wltoys 124019, very cheap 1/12 vehicle. If you are interested in that.
I have often thought about making it a rally car.
Wltoys 124019, is 227mm, I busted it real good, but now all good, for some reason I wasn’t videoing, that always happens, think you gonna go for a short run and CURB!!! With no video. I am in the market for a body now. This will work for when I want to jump it.

Oh no! The dreaded curb collision, I've been there too, lol. That's also why I'm planning an off road centric build :). That's a sweet little rig though!

That BMW 2002 body just speaks to me. I adore that darn boxy car so much. I'm going to do a deeper dive on the LC Racing chassis since it's 227mm and should fit that body.

I think you're on the right track with the LC Racing chassis. Let's drag a pro with modding LCR stuff into the discussion - @TeknoJ

And that BMW body is one of my favorites!

OK, I will try to help. What is that bug body, is that the phatbodies phunkenblitz?
Now that I realized I was looking at a 1/12 BMW 2002. I'm looking at the 1/10 body, it's a 254mm wheelbase. So that lead me to the LC PTG-2 as a chassis.
