I'm wanting to get a little more technical with paint jobs and was wondering what airbrush to get . I've never had one or used one before so just looking for some pointers.

Thanks

Single action airbrushes are easiest to use. But you may outgrow those too soon.

I'd recommend a quality dual-action, internal mix airbrush with "metal" type internals (Aztec has airbrushes with plastic internals). Once you get to this point, selecting a dual-action internal mix, it comes down to personal preference.

I've been using an airbrush for some 24+ years. I've had many different airbrushes. Currently I have 2 Iwata HP-Cs and a Paasche VL.

For painting lexan bodies, I've only needed to use my VL. The VL does it all from thick to thin, from fine lines to broad lines. It can handle it all. The price is also right. Bear-Air has the "kit" for around 60-70 bucks.

Although this is what I use, again, any quality dual-action internal mix would fit the bill....

One of my local tool stores has the Paasche VL on there site for 59.99. I'm gonna go today and check it out and probably pick one up.

thanks

I also use a Paasche VL and I have had very good luck with it. I also hear that Iwata comes highly recommended, but like AR said, I think it's preference. Best first advice is to practice. Practice. Practice...

egt a badger 155 anthem its one needle for all things all metal and the 155-7 kit comes with the braided hose, color cup, siphon bottle and thats all the he paashe is ok but i only use it for clearcoating also the badger 155 anthem can do fine lines with paint that is a little more thinner making it good for the beginner and can be used throught to professional level

What do you think would be the best place to buy Paasche VL? I am very interested in starting as well and need a good place to buy parts.

I use the Aztec A490 set & love it. Gives you the option of using both Dual & Single action..

I have known of people that use a CO2 tank instead of a compressor. Do you think that this would be a good idea? What are the positives and negatives, if there are any?

I think using the CO2 tanks is a great inexpensive method for air. Of course you'd still need a regulator and moisture trap. I personally have not used one.

I think the pro is tha its a "cheap" way to deliver air.
IMO, its also better than a cheap compressor. Cheap compressors are noisy (which I found very distracting when trying to paint) and most don't deliver air in a constant stream. They pulse with the piston. Doesn't make for very fine lines....

The cons are:

Its heavy (depending on size)
You have to go get it filled periodically
You have to find a place to buy it initially and a place to get it filled

I am pretty sure CO2 is anhydrous so you won't need a moisture trap.

Anhydrous- used to describe compounds that contain no water, or crystals that lack chemically bound water (water of crystallization)

So I am almost sure you will not need a moisture tap. But you will definitely need a regulator!

Is CO2 the same thing as propellant that's sold in a can?

Truthfully, it will still work out cheaper to get yourself a pancake compressor & a moisture trap setup than it would be to go with an air tank.... Most compressors come with a regulator on it already, and usually only run around $125... If your a home owner like myself, there's endless uses for it around the house...
