It's not bad really. There are tricks to it. Like I said, thicker is better. So if brushing it on, use a good brush. Not synthetic. Actual horse hair works great. Make sure you put down at least 6 coats. And when cutting, the Xacto #16 stencil blades will help you cut a much straighter line, and keep you from cutting too deep. When cutting with these blades, it almost feels like the liquid mask is pulling the blade into it. So you don't really even need any downward pressure. That's not the case with the standard #11 blades. I used liquid mask a lot back in my slot car days. I always sucked at cutting it out. Corners not cut cleanly, cutting too deep, etc. Not now. So give it a shot with the #16 blades and see if it isn't a game changer for you as well.
Notes taken! I’ve always brushed it on with a good brush but, apparently, never enough coats lol. I’ve always done 2-3 coats. Def never tried #16 blades. Will have to give it another go soon!

The more coats you apply, the easier it is to remove in one big sheet. Too few coats, and you're pulling it off in tiny shredded pieces, with bits stuck everywhere.

This bug only had 5 coats. I wish I had gone at least one more. Tearing it off is a bit frustrating in spots.

Decided to go ahead and do a bit of purple on the wings. Wish I hadn't because the overspray stuck in the corners, creating lines that shouldn't be there, but lesson learned.

I need a better airbrush dammit lol.

Also went ahead and shot some pearl white on the remaining area of the wings, so all they need now is a backing coat of silver or white.

I love that fade! I want to learn how to do those.
It's looking awesome!!

Thanks Gwen. It's a re-learning experience for me. I haven't painted anything this involved since the early 90's. At most I have done 3 colors and stripes, or flames. This one will have a number of forgotten techniques used on it. I kinda want to do fish scales in the undentations, just to toss some old school flair into it. But I don't know if I want to go that far. That, and my airbrush would likely flub that up for me, which will flub up the fade, etc.

No idea what overspray problems you see... 🤣 freaking AWESOME job!!! 😍😍😍

Thanks Mike!
The overspray isn't terrible with an airbrush. But I do cloud up my RC room painting these bathtubs without a booth 😝

So after curing for a couple days, I laid down some Spaz Stix enamels. First up after the purple candy fade was Green/Purple/Teal color change paint. Then I put down a backer using Spaz Stix's Mirror Chrome, followed by their Ultimate Black backer. It should look a lot better once the protective film is peeled, but I am going to need to let this cure for a day or two before continuing on, to let the enamel off-gas completely.

Next up, I am going to run the purple fade in front of the rest of the tearoff area, and I am going to put a fade around the front fenders as well. Then the entire front end gets a lighter layer of purple candy, followed by... gulp... some ghosted real fire flames. I am going to test this on a sheet of clear film, and if I can't get the result I'm after, I may just do a dish soap splash job on the front, thanks to @Chubaka reminding me of that little trick.

Currently feeling a bit high from enamel fumes, so I'm going to let this room clear out and see what I can do with this darn SCT body that I candied yellow already 🤪

Went ahead and peeled the front mask. A bit of learning took place. Any areas like this raised rib between the red lines here, make sure you apply a little extra liquid mask. This had 5 coats, and it was a real bitch to peel this area because of no room to get my fingers in there, the vertical walls holding onto the masking, and just not enough masking to pull through all that without tearing.

I have a few bug bodies with that same line going down the hood. Thanks for the tip!!! 😎

I think I'm gonna need a LOT of practice before I'm gonna attempt something like this tho! 😲

Well, I let myself be talked into using pink. It kinda clashes with the hood indentations. I actually with I had done those different, as I like the pink on this.

And my dumbass put too much black in my pearl white for the drop shadows. But it was next to impossible to see that until it was too late, when I sprayed the white over it.

Is what it is. I'm not happy with it, but it will do. I am going to try to make the wing match now.

Had to distress the wing as well to help tie everything in. Adding the pink threw everything off. I should have done a pale lime green.

Next up is to touch up around the trim a little, then I am going to tint the windows with the same purple in the hood indentations, then shoot some mirror chrome behind that.

After everything cures a couple days I am going to assemble the wing and eventually I will be backing the fenders with some E6000 and fiberglash mesh tape to keep the tires from accidentally cutting into the paint.

Went ahead and mounted the wing. It does help tie everything together. Once the windows are tinted, I think it will look a lot better.

Those shadows though... 🤢🤮🤬

I just about wiped the paint off to redo them. But man, that would cause a lot of work trying to blend things back in.

Lesson learned - next time, mix up all paint ahead of time and test how well everything looks on a piece of clear mylar before spraying the body 😝

I used to love hot pink up until I joined the Air Force. I have a pink phobia thanks to my drill instructor (short but long story for another time). You, somehow, are making pink cool again for me  :thumbs-up:
