Thinking of getting a small scale crawler. SCX24 or TRX4M high trail? I understand the TRX4M is better out of the box but aren't there more mods for the axial?
The 1:10 TRX4 is well known for being excellent in stock form, but I don't believe the TRX4M has quite earn the same reputation.
I own all 3 platforms, and I would say you can't go wrong with either the SCX24 or TRX4M. But, yes, the SCX24 has been around much, much longer and a ton of mods and aftermarket parts have been developed for it.

100% agree with @Chubaka and @Xraycer. Don't forget FMS to compete with the TRX4m. The FMS won't have as many aftermarket mods as an SCX24, but you will get a 2 speed transmission and if you like a scale look, FMS does do a darn good job at it.

I have had the scx24 deadbolt. I currently have a TRX4M Bronco and High Trail and a FMS max smasher. I like that the TRX4M is larger. I put Traxxas beadlocks with brass rings on the High Trail and it helps it stay planted. The smasher is just fun and it has decent wheel speed.

I would not say the TRX4M is better out of the box. They tend to be top heavy. Almost all mini crawlers can benefit from some upgrades. Axial SCX24's have been around the longest so have the most support, but there is no shortage of aftermarket parts for either brand.

Lately I've been favoring the Redcat Ascent18 or the HobbyPlus CR18P for capability right out of the box.

If your favoring scale looks over performance then the TRX4M or FMS FCX series are where you should look.

I know you didn't mention it, but I would consider a Redcat. I have a couple of SCX24s. My buddy, who got me into them, has like 10. Recently he picked up the Redcat Ascent 18.
We were both very impressed with the Redcat and agree, hands down, it's better than the SCX24 out of the box.

i have stopped buying smaller than 10th scale, i get frustrated with the size of the xcrews, but if i got one i would grab an ascent18. the ascent10 is such a beast, i would hope the smaller was at least half as capable if thats true then it would stomp all over our 24's.

From my limited experience, the Ascent 18 is a very good performer

I agree on the small screws, that's why I am so blessed to have my own personal "mechanic"

Went ahead and bought a 24, trying to decide on it's first upgrade. Would like a bit more power but I really don't know crap about electronics. I am assuming that if I replace the motor and esc I would need new radio equipment?

that's not orange

No, not orange. Orange was going to take longer to arrive and I was anxious. The hell of it is, I screwed up with the arrival date and ended up waiting the same amount of time I would have waited for orange.

The ascent 18 really surprised me aswell as I mostly have Scx24 stuff the ascent 18 is best bang for your buck. It's cheaper to build an Scx24 from scratch.

I only have fms rigs and I say don't overlook them. They're awesome out of the box and tons of upgrades.
The camel rigs are the fcx24m line and the k5 is the fcx10 line. I am thoroughly impressed with them.

The FMS trucks are great trail trucks, I love my FCX24's, but they come nowhere close to the Redcat Apex or the Hobbyplus Juice Up for crawling capabilities. Still love them though, FMS is top dog for scale looks on minicrawlers.
