Yeah, I got it. It's in great shape, too, but it needs to be cleaned up a bit.
SO...
The first thing I need to do is clean up these bearings. I wanna soak them in something overnight. Would vinegar work? After I soak them I would wash them in warm soapy water and oil them. How's that?

If you’re gonna “rescue” them, it’s gonna require some serious effort, with minimal payoff.. once you ditch the grease for oil, they’re on borrowed time, and will need regular maintenance about every 3hrs of drive time..

Personally I’d work up a grocery list, and replace them with new greased units-as inexpensive as they are.. Just my .02..

This is the way.

iv done this numerous times. pop the shields out and soak them in gasoline overnight. blast them out with brake cleaner. make sure they're spinning free. then repack with grease (iv always used AE silicone grease cause it's what i had on hand). pop the shields back in let'm eat!

I would do this to revive my dirt oval Slashes between seasons. Only difference was I would use Tamiya precision bearing oil instead of grease. Definitely use the grease for a basher.

Thanks, guys. I soaked 'em in 3-In-1 overnight (Dad recommended it, too), so we'll see how they do.
Then they will now need to be oiled every three hours of runtime.

Only way to negate this is to get that “3in1” OUT, remove dust shields, soak in Naphtha or degreaser, blow out with compressed air, REgrease each with proper NLGI 2 bearing grease (NOT just whatever you have laying around), and reinstall all shields without damaging them…

Once oil is in, grease is garbage. This is why I recommended what I do in my 1st reply.

if you're racing and chasing proper consistent performance, reliability, and/or longevity. yes. but this is a 20+ year old emaxx. he could pee on them, soak them in used motor oil and run them for years if he remembers to lube them up again on occasion. been there done that (minus the pee part).
to us half ass bashers, lube is lube. you'll destroy half the truck and break the bearings before improperly lubed bearings fully give up the ghost. the wheel bearings on my T3 back in the day would have given your nightmares nightmares. :hehe: truck worked just fine. not everything has to be done the right way ;)

Then what’s the point?
Leave em dry I guess

Every bit of this is false. It’s not a matter of opinion, it’s FACT. “Not everything has to be done the right way”??? Helluva sales pitch there dude… 🙄🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

iv done that as well. they'll last longer than you think they will.
trying to think, what have i lubed bearings with. AE grease as previously mentioned. 3n1, WD40, Prolong, probably every spray can penetrating lube on the market 20+ years ago. motor oil (new and used. also used motor oil as shock oil once), shock oil. some dry teflon spray i found in a friends garage, graphite powder, KY, vaseline, generic brand neosporin, and baby oil, automotive wheel bearing grease,
iv yet to have bearings fail or wear out prematurely because of it. iv got bearings that are over 20 years old still in use or still in my tool box because they're good to use. probably because i was constantly (every few months) cleaning and relubing them cause they were totally filthy.

Not everyone is running in a 6x6’ square either chief. 🤷🏻‍♂️

You do you, and I’ll continue to “waste my time and experience” doing things correctly, and understanding that all lubricants are not created equally. 🤘

i have that same understanding, just didn't always have the resources to abide (especially 20 years ago) had to do things the redneck way or in some cases the third world way. learned how to get by with what i had or could scrounge up. learned the right way and the way to get by. ;)

I can fully appreciate that Holmes.. For this imo, given the cost, and the fact that literally EVERYONE has some kind of NLGI 2 wheel bearing grease SOMEwhere in their house, or garage-it’s worth doing right, or dropping literally $18 (or even less 🤷🏻‍♂️) on a set of NMB’s.. Just my .02. 😘
