Ok
SO last Sunday I was playing with my Volcano 16 in the parking lot after church. (we all hang out after service and have a meal) I let my Pastor's son use it for a bit, then started messing with my daughter's Slash
When I got it back, it wasn't working. It would go like a foot or two then just die. It was pretty wet; there were some puddles in the parking lot

I took it home, put a new battery in, and my buddy came over, and he and I and my daughter went to a gravel pit.
Tried two different batteries and it's a no go.

It will turn on and if you are holding it, and you give it throttle, it goes fine
As soon as you put it on the ground, it will move a few feet, slowly, then shut off

So, is it most likely an ESC or the motor? Both are fairly cheap, but I would rather only replace the correct part.
I am in the middle of a 1/10 crawler build so my discretional spending has been directed towards that. Eventually I would love to go brushless, but that will cost as much as I paid for the car. I got it on sale for $88.
A Hobbywing set up, new receiver and some 2S batteries (it currently runs on Li-Ion and I would want to go Lipo if I go brushless) will run about $100

Unfortunately, I don't have anythign to replace either the motor or the ESC to test it

Anyone know a good way to figure out which is the culprit? Is one more likely to be the issue than the other?

I would vote the 2-1 is toast.

You can test the motor by just applying voltage to it. If it has standard bullets you can put those right to a 2s lipo and see if she spins. Make sure you take the tires off or remove the motor pinion so it doesn't try and drive off.

Looking at the manual it states the 2-1 is only splash proof and not waterproof, unfortunately.
