After many years , I’m back looking at RC rigs again due to my son showing an interest in it. I’m gonna get one for him and one for myself. I’ve been looking at Traxxas. They seem to have a lot of good bashing trucks.

So far , I like the Rustler 4x4 Ultimate and the Maxx. Do these seem like solid picks? What else should I be considering?

I'm fairly new as well, I have a good number of Traxxas and really have enjoyed them. They seem to get a lot of hate on the ol' inter-webs, but doesn't bother me.

The 1/10 maxx is probably a good starter, or a slash like the maxx slash. I don’t own anything Traxxas but some people like them. I have my own opinion on Traxxas products and won’t support them however, I have been thinking about getting the 1/10 maxx/widemaxx monster truck.
It all boils down to what are you looking to do with it and what is your terrain?

I love my Traxxas rigs, I have the Xmaxx, Erevo, Stampede 4x4, Stampede 2wd, and Tmaxx.
They get haters because they sent out threatening letters to venders who sell after market parts for Traxxas rigs.
Threatened them with lawsuits.
I love anything RC so I don't care what company is on them.
I have Traxxas, Arrma Typhon, Axial crawlers, Redcat crawlers and a bunch of custom crawlers I built.
I also built my Xmaxx and Erevo. I have a couple micro planes and a few planes I've built.

keep in mind, RCs break and sometimes more often than we like.
Smacking curbs, power poles, fences, garbage cans, hell even hitting a sister will break them. "ask me how I know". :D

Varying opinions about their aggressively protecting intellectual property.

I have a number of Traxxas vehicles. My middle son has the Maxx, it's been good for him.

Take a look at the Stampede 4x4 too, it's the same basic truck as the Rustler 4x4, but has more ground clearance.

I’ll be just bashing around the back yard, fields of short grass and parking lots.

Why won’t you support Traxxas? Is there something I don’t know about them? What other companies should I be looking at?

Welcome to the site. Where and what size area do you plan on running in?
We’ll be running in pretty big open fields and large parking lots. There are a few schools nearby and the look perfect. Also , there’s a closed down bank with ample parking lot space and grassy areas to run on.

I like the upgraded parts on the Rustler 4x4 Ultimate. I had a Rustler XL1 a long time ago. And the Maxx just looks sick.

Arrma & Traxxas have a huge following & massive amounts of replacement parts & aftermarket parts.
Arrma? That’s a new one for me. I’ll check them out tonight.

Those cars listed should be fine. All my cars are in my about me. I had an old xl1 rustler. Just don't fall for the traxxas aluminum camber and steering links. They have make your own titanium ones.

Just basically what @Tunedfrog said ☝️, additionally I feel like the cars are made as cheap as possible and overpriced for what they are, but so is Losi. Having said that I don’t own one so, I MAY be out of line on that statement.
For a beginner or getting back into the hobby sure, Traxxas may not be bad at all, lots of people have had good experiences with Traxxas cars.
Arrma, Traxxas, Team Associated, some Losi’s, haiboxing/hbx is supposedly durable, there’s a slew out there, it’s all about just picking one up to test and of course telling us all about it. It’s just part of the hobby. You’ll get one but then want another.

Traxxas is fine imo. I have a slash and rustler (2wd) and once their upgraded their quite durable. Actually my slash was my first RC when I was 7 and I still have it today. So my slash is turning 9 this Christmas and my rustler would be 4 in November.

Now the rustler 4x4 ultimate and Maxx, out of the box, they are beasts. The rusty ultimate comes with HD and aluminum upgrades right out of the box which most people upgrade on later on the lower / base models so that will help out alot. But in the future they might have their faults, mostly the electronics. (To be fair, most RTR electronics of any brand have their faults after a while so it's not totally Traxxas) Actually one of my mom's old friends just got into the hobby RC world with a maxx a month ago and so far i see he is having tons of fun.

Any rig can be a compete lemon but any rig can be a great one.
Personally I would stay away from Redcat bashers. I've had one and still haven't went through a whole tank of fuel.
The Redcat crawlers on the other hand are decent.
I have a Redcat Everest 10 crawler and a Gen 7 crawler.
Regardless of what you go with, there is a ton of knowledgeable guys here and more than willing to
answer any questions you have @PainKiller .

@PainKiller , don't let @bill_delong boycott post keep you from checking Traxxas out.
They are awesome hobby grade rigs.
He only does that because all the other kids wouldn't let him win at Kick The Can.

You know, I do agree. Don’t let me steer you away from Traxxas either.
@PainKiller , we have a hypergo from Amazon and it is a lot of fun, super cheap, and a copy of the Traxxas design 🤣. Don’t be afraid of trial and error.

I have 5 Traxxas rigs. 4 Associated units and a couple Bolink pieces. Also an Axial or 2 and a RocHobby. You can get parts and support for Traxxas stuff about any hobby shop and even possibly NAPA!! Kidding.
