Looking to get a spektrum esc and 3300kv combo to replace my stock setup. Anyone have any experience doing this with a rustler? Any other suggestions of other brands?

Any suggestions on pinion count for the stock setup. Not looking to zoom it but, I’m thinking high 40’s -50 mph is what I’m looking for. Can I still run in appropriate grass with it?

Thanks fellas

Not much help, but I am currently running a Castle Sidewinder 4 combo with a 17 tooth pinion. But that's not very practical. I just use mine for sand drags

I too run a sidewinder 3800 in my stampede. Almost uncontrollable on 3s. I would look at castle or even a cheaper brand. I look at spectrum like I do traxxas. They really you in with proprietary bs. You can find sidewinder on ebay starting around 130 or so.

Yeah, the only problem I have with my SW4 is the esc keeps catching on fire with only 3s

I'm running a Hobbywing Quicrun 10BL120 esc with their 3660-3150kv motor.

Stock gearing, IIRC, is an 11T pinion and 54T spur. I run a 13T pinion, but mostly on 2S and it is fast enough for my uses.

I'm pretty sure Traxxas recommends a 17T pinion on 3S to start for speed runs and maxes out at 20T. You probably give up some low end torque with that setup so it may not do as well in grass.

Not sure on the "grass" type/length, but that will definitely require a person to keep a close eye on temps as they move forward with a new combo and the unknown... tires, run time expectations, driving style, tranny components, etc., etc. Just mentioning grass will raise motor temps.
yeah.webp

Yes it will. I have since installed a fan but, the area I run in has grass, gravel and dirt. I hit thermal shutdown before the fan. Now, it’s fine the whole pack but, I’m Leary of a pinion increase due to that.

You're well versed in knowing the variables at hand then. When installing a new motor, use your current gearing as a starting point, or just estimate appropriately for differences in Kv/can length/LiPo cell count. Infrared thermometers are the #1 tool in the hobby for things like you're doing. Keep that temp gun at your side... get out there and throw some dirt!

I run HWs 10BL120 G2 WP /w 3652 4000kv on 23/86, on 2s and I can easily reach high 30s/low 40s. I run the same setup on my slash too although that's a tiny bit slower due to weight and wheel/tire mass, but I do have a old 3660 4000kv HW motor that is a torque monster off the line.

I run another pack through it this evening. Everytime I get myself convinced of changing this car, I run it the next day and then decide it’s fine the way it is. These things are a blast.

I stripped the plastic spur gear Friday afternoon. So, I ordered a steel replacement and a 13tooth pinion. That woke it up nicely.

The wanders of Amazon. Order something and get it in less than 48 hours. Dogs were happy too.
