Hello, I've been lurking for a few days and looking through threads, seeing people who asked questions I had and figured out most of the things I was going to ask. Everyone seemed friendly so I registered to share my first Traxxas. I have built Tamiyas for a long time, several TT's and swapped them all to one of those all aluminum chassis, so that's the vector I'm coming in from. I've never owned an off road car or a car this large. I'm very impressed by the quality of the truck, I haven't even really driven it much. I found the thread with the gentleman's Slash also riding low, so I followed those instructions and tightened my shocks so the arms sit level with the chassis ( https://traxxas.com/articles/suspension-tuning-guide-part2 ). I read someone say there were ties on them but I suppose these simply came fully uncompressed because I couldn't find anything. I've watched a lot of videos and done a lot of reading, but as I explore this flavor of RC, I would kindly appreciate any advice to not destroy it in some simple way I'm not aware of. I have been able to rent the rear wheel versions frequently, so I've driven them about 10 hours, but someone else was always doing the maintenance.

I was planning on purchasing a lot of the RPM mods like the tire rack, mud flaps and a lighting kit. How durable do they tend to me? I really like the aesthetics of the tire mounts, but I wonder if the added bars make the care more vulnerable somehow? One of the mods I wanted to ask specifically about that I've seen a few times here and other places, the mesh dust jackets. There seems to be quite a selection, do any of them stand out in particular? I don't plan on playing much in heavy rain or wet environments, mostly grassy and gravel. My usage for it would mostly be cleanliness, I have an air compressor with a blower tip to clean it up with before I put it up. I've seen people in videos that spray their car with their hose, straight onto the ESC and everything. Seems bold? Someone linked mud wheel wells and I can see their use but it adds a lot to the body. I believe I will be taping the interior of the wheel wells, I've seen a lot of people here use the metallic style tape to insulate the body a little bit, is that the best variety? Should I purchase a fan for my motor if the ambient temperature is about 80 Fahrenheit? If any of this is a terrible idea, or if a particular mod is a real lemon, I'd appreciate advice from someone more experienced.

I feel like my rear wheels are a little inward facing but I've never had a car with a suspension like this, so maybes it's just weird camber. I've checked to make sure the shocks are oiled, I've turned on that battery feature on the ECS for LiPos, I think I'm about to take it out in the morning before it gets too warm. I've seen people mention to check that there's a tiny amount of play in the transmission, but if all 4 wheels turn typically I would assume that is sufficient. I've been obsessing over this thing for a year, I wonder how many DON'T DESTROY YOUR CAR!!!! bait videos I watched that didn't have a single drop of practical advice. Please help me navigate around the dreaded, 'I wish I had known..' I'm glad I took some pictures of it before I went and got it dirty. I bought two 5000mAH 3s, I might look for a larger 2s for longer walks. I am very excited. Thank you guys in advance, have a great week.

Here are a few pictures in case anyone would look and see if anything is alarmingly out of place. I know the shocks aren't 1:1, I plan on loosening them tonight and marking them if they're not already marked to correct them.

Welcome to RCT. Parts for the Slash are fairly cheap. Any of the dust covers should help keep the electronics free from gravel and grass, so just pick one you like.

I don't know if the mud flaps are good or not. I don't own a Slash. I would just start with a dust cover if you're that concerned about it.

I don't use them myself. After driving an RC, I flip the car over and shake the dirt and rocks out. Then I use a parts cleaning brush and Simple Green every once in awhile. If it gets really bad, I simply tear it down.

The "toe in" you are referring to is normal. You can buy arms that set the toe to 0°, 1°, etc. But drive it like it is. It'll be fine.

"Camber" is the angle of the wheels top to bottom. You adjust that with this link.

Welcome to RCT!

Thank you all very much for the warm welcome. Today I'm going to download the angle finder app on my phone and adjust the suspension using the guide RustyUS linked. Thank you very much, once I get it settled in, I'll take some pictures to see what you guys think. There's so much stuff in the catalogue here, I read a thread from a few years ago in an Arabic country trying to do dunes with the exact same car, that's fascinating. I've also been reading a lot about tire nuts being a good upgrade. Still debating the mesh, I live on the gulf and it stays warm, concerned the temperature would become an issue. Going to purchase one of those small palm-size electric screwdrivers they use at my local hobby store to work on it.

I've purchased the RPM bumper, mud flaps, tail lights and single tire rack. I know none of them are particularly original, but I like their look.

Dude, I like your style. Mudflaps rule! I went out of my way to make 'em happen on a new SCT.

Welcome, it's good to see you have a hobby cat to supervise! That's already a step in the right direction, and an orange one too. :)

Be sure to use the Bluetooth link to make finer adjustments to your Ultimate.

Doing that tomorrow at work, change happens slowly in my world.

The mods should arrive by Sunday, I'll post some updates, yours look killer. RPM is a blessing.

Orange cats are built for this hobby. Mine's named Harper after Patrick Harper of the Sharpe's series of British Napoleonic warfare. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharpe_(TV_series) Great watch if you need some wholesome war movies, it's a series but every episode is 90 minutes.

I'm going to write a little text file on how many turns I put the suspension at for the first few runs, set up my transmitter and probably take it for a drive behind work this week, still haven't ran it but I have a massive private parking lot to run the crap out of it.

Welcome to RCT.

I will keep is short, or try. I bought my ultimate a few years back.

I get the concern, have an older Tamiya and I had to buy parts in trees buy ordering them and waiting 2 weeks. I can't get parts at all now. Traxxas is totally different. You won't ruin your car. Every part on there is available and replaceable.

Mods - The (solid) advice given to me was run it till it breaks. Parts are cheap and plentiful. Anything you upgrade puts stress on other components. Choose what you what parts you want to break. With that said, I broke the axles and upgraded to the HD ones. It's find now. But I run 3S and I'm not kind to it. It's much easier on it with 2S.

Cleaning - Yes you can hose it down, just don't dunk it in the pool. Compressed air, blower, small vacuums are a very helpful.

Body - Shoe Goo and drywall tape does wonders. https://www.rctalk.com/forum/threads/how-to-reinforce-car-body.127853/#post-1546051 It's messy and stinky - be warned.

Fan - Depends how long and how hard you run it. I believe Traxxas makes a fan.

Rear wheels - Yes there is tow in. This is to make it more stable. It's normal and not adjustable. Rear camber is adjustable with turn buckles.

DON'T DESTROY YOUR CAR - You will be fine, but things will break. 2S is easier on the car if you're concerned. Destroying your car is an over statement and you would have to work very hard at it. Traxxas tough.

Battery - If you 5000mah is a good size. I get about 15-20 mins from a 4500. But this totally depends on how you drive. I wouldn't go too big, but just buy a few extras. More batteries = more run time.

Thank you so much for this advice. I'm going to spring for a 7400mah 2s for casual strolls, the whole reason I'm going Traxxas was like you said, I can go in town and pick up parts, they seem to be very affordable and I would love to be able to take a 1 hour walk with a truck, maybe I'll end up with two 2s so I can just drive and enjoy it. I'm so excited to try this. I know it's silly I haven't gotten to run it yet but I work a lot and I'm patient. Some of the mods arrived today, and I think I've done some research and decided on the next part.

Parts arriving, the bumper arrives tomorrow and the tail lights Monday I think.

Ordered these today, thinking maybe putting the light bar below the front windshield to give it a little better chance of life after a spill.

I'm going to drive over to the Traxxas dealer tomorrow on my day off and purchase a tire, or four, for my tire mount. See what other stuff they have available. I'll take some pictures of their engines and some of their selection just to share my journey into this little truck.

I'm looking for a fan, I've looked up the one recommended officially from Traxxas. Probably go with that one. Does anyone have one that has worked very well? I'll get one with a shroud, I see these cheap 3d printed ones and I bet they only have a few rolls in them, someone even said grass could stop the blades.

I would run it and see where your at with the temps. If you're going for a walk and it's 2S, you could probably make ice with it. Mine has only gotten hot a few times when I was flogging it.

If you decide you want a fan, thermodynamics is a funny thing. Some things look like they "should" work and they don't and other things work and we don't know why. The only thing I can tell you for sure is more air flow is better. The shroud and fins are all a bit arbitrary because it depends on the air flow inside the body.

You've got a 36mm (diameter) motor and in theory there are a bunch of them. 36mm/540/550 are all the same diameter. The only thing might be how your wires are routed, you may have to trim the fan shroud a bit.

Simple setups seem to work well. Never used this one but it seem like the right shape.

The other type of design is open with fans above.

This is wonderful hands-on knowledge, thank you. I will review these extensively.

I've read several times on this forum that people have reported heatsinks actually causing heat buildup and strictly fans seem to do a better job. I'll try to focus on a high cfm small fan or two to just blow on the motor. I'm overthinking it, I'll see what it runs the way you suggested.

Most of the mods arrived, minus the tail lights. Those will be here tomorrow. I didn't go to the RC store today, I got violently drunk and it set me back a day. Back on the wagon, maybe tomorrow I will go get some new wheels.

Going to put these together tomorrow, I'll cut the body for the tire rack and potentially go get a spare tire tomorrow.
