Phase 1 of my Upstairs remodel begins today

Didn't get that much done today. Tomorrow is the big day. Up till now they have only been working 2-2.5 hours a night. They will be here a full 10 and hopefully get most of it knocked out. I have the "Hot Mop" guy coming at 7am Monday morning so at least the shower has to framed in and the drain set.

Everything is now brushed nickel. Gold was cool 12 years ago when we got the house but is tacky now. We are also installing a pure glass shower enclosure that will eliminate 99% of all the metal around the shower. Haven’t made up our mind if it will have an accent strip of nickel across the top or not.

I’m having an on demand tankless heater installed so their should be no reason Ill run out of hot water unless I'm to broke to pay the electric bill.

Looks like they left the Gold in the new tub from the pic you just posted.... You're a lucky man Ed... Equity in a house??? I seem to keep getting caught buying high then the market takes a big DUMP!! Just bought this house in OCT for $270K and saw one just like it listed this week for $255K :thumbdown

I've got 3 years till I finish my DC, hopefully I can break even by then...
BTW... Looks Great!

i personally dont trust the hot mop, especially if you live in a 2 story, i've been making concrete pans with a pvc membrane i think i did like 6 this year already...but i guess thats what they used back in the days along with copper and lead pans... i love doing bathrooms...I'm currently work on a house built in the 30's its a total mess...

Are those also new low energy windows I see? Nice!!! Those were the first upgrades we did after moving in. Made a big difference in the cooling of the house.

Is that a 5 ft tub Ed?
Looks smaller in the pic.

Funny how everyone notices everything in the pic. (the gold drain cap, the low energy windows, etc.).
You guys are funny. lmao.

The windows were upgraded when we got the house. Thats one of the good things about buying one new, we had the option then and took it. Yes the tub is a 5' something deep unit. I'm using a fish eye lens to shoot and it makes everything look shorter. The bathroom is 11 feet wide.

The gold trim is another story. I spend what amounts to a weeks pay for most people on a fixture and it doesn't come with a vent cap or drain plug. ERRRR.... Yet something else to buy.

The hot mop pan is what both the framer and the tile guy wanted to use. It was kind of a "Mater of fact" Item that I didn't question. They are both working together and its all included in the price. I do know what there is a special guy that does only shower sealing and needed to be scheduled in. Is this not a good way to seal it? If not, I need to know now so I can arrange something different. From what I understand they use a mortar bed for slope, then some sort of rubber or plastic liner, then tar paper covered with a layer of tar. The liner, paper, and tar go 6-9" up the wall and up and over the threshold.

Hay Ratzo, How in the hell did you live through you remodel? I'm in need of therapy.

You'll be more than fine with the hot mop installation. If anything, it will provide a more solid base for the tile work to sit on. Less flex in the flooring = less broken tile/grout later on... The reasoning behind the higher end fixtures not coming with the trim kits, is basically to keep the contractor sane.. lol Homeowners can't malke up there minds, and think nothing of asking the contractors to just exchange trim kits 2 or 3 times before they make a final decision..
While your at it, order one of these bad boys... SWEET...

Toto is cool stuff and I would love to have one of their high class shiters. The price is just to much for me at this point. Ill have to continue to use the sink and wifes hair dryer to to stay "Fresh" after I go .

as long as the guys doing the install has knowldge of shower pans, I've had to fix many as they did not pitch it correctly, and water puddles in the corners, holes in the membrane, as long they are using some type of membrane along with the hot mop you'll be ok, I've seen some guys just use the hot mop as a means of sealing..shower pans have come a long way in the last 20 years they are new types of membranes as imbroken pointed out along with a company called shuter they have a good system as well you should be ok if they are going to be using a membrane....get the guys some cold drinks and treat them well they'll take good care of you...lol

Got a lot done but still a long way to go. I'm all ready for the pan guys on Monday. The pluming is all set for the tub and new fixtures as well.

Well it finely happened. My wife freaked out. I knew it would happen but it came later then I expected.

The hot mop people were to be at the house at 7am and showed up a 6am while she was still in bed. It wasn’t an issue for me but the master bath is in the master bedroom. This set her off due to the fact that she usually sleeps till 10am. Then as they got into the job she sees them carrying 5 gallon buckets of melted tar from one end of the house to the other then up the stairs and down the hallway. I’m not going to mention what she said about the smell of having 10 gallons of steaming tar in the bedroom.

All I can do is LMAO and assure here the worst is over. I hope it’s all out of her system now. I knew I was in for it when the dog wouldn’t even stay in the same room with her.

that is some nasty poop!!! i dont know how roofers can handle that smell all day....

Made some more progress over the last few days and are getting to the end of the construction. They hot moped the shower, did the rest of the pluming, got the green board up, and are in the process of texturing the walls.

I am having an issue on tile and design. So much to choose from and so many ways to display it. My biggest issue is do I go with a solid granite counter top and a solid slate on the bath deck / shower bench to match or to use granite tiles there instead. The look is a little different but the cost difference is huge.

i dont know why they dont use a tile backer board....i use hardibacker board it can soak in water for a year and wont crumble...i did one yesterday and took out all the drywall they had a spot where the water was getting behind the plate (control) and it just soaked the drywall and fell apart..I'm replacing with hardibacker....granite tiles is a good way to go its resonable 4-5.00 per sqaure with a 1/16 spaceer they look killer may want to use epoxy grout...not to worry ed the drywall will last a long time as long as its kept sealed and caulked..coming along real nice what going on the floor?

From what I understand it’s not drywall, they call it “Green Board” I believe it’s similar to the hardy you use. It’s sheetrock with a green waterproofed / resistant coating or some poop… on the top.

The bathroom floor is hardwood with tile around the shower entrance. We don’t use the tub often so they (Wife and Designer) decided against my advice and went with wood to the tub. WTF do I know? Don’t answer that, I’m just along for the ride when it comes to the design.
