~Need Some help~ (Buggy Guru's)

A friend of mine had bought a Brand new Gs Storm buggy, and brought it over for me to fix for him (Hes VERY new to Rc). So I got it today, and the prob is with the pullstart. When I pulled it all the way out, it wouldnt recoil back in, so I automatically thought it was the spring. So I removed the pullstart, and it seems to work fine. So I went a little deeper into the block and took the back plate off. inside a found a round thing connected to the shaft that looks like a one way bearing that isnt catching. Is that what this is? I tried to clean it out with some carb cleaner and also lightly sanded the shaft and it still spins. I just thought it was weird for a one way bering to go bad already, I mean it isnt even done being broken in. I'm kinda new to buggys, so I thought Id ask the masters.. Its a Gs storm with the B01 pullstart engine. Let me know if I missed any bases and what ya think.. Thanks fellas!!

It's possible your friend let the cord snap back and that could have spun the OWB. OWB are like glow plugs, IMO, you never know when they are going to take a crap.

or pullstart is so tight against the backing plate that the knot in the cord is catching. try leaving the pullstart assembly a little loose and see what it does. if it works with the screws a little loose pull it back out and put some lock-tite on the screws and put it back on a little loose. not so loose there is play in it though.

if its brand new why piss with it take to the hobby shop where he bought it and show them i am sure they will fix it for free or just replace the buggy or something

Agree....I won't help anyone w/ a P/S...i know that sounds like an butthead thing to say but I have had somany times where I wanted to bust a vessel in my head from frustration......get a box and never look back.....

Well, first off... You DO Not sand one-way shafts, because they need tight clearances. Did you lightly oil the one way? The one way should not have anything to do with the rewinding of the pull start.

did i read this right?? this "one way" is inside the crankcase?? never seen one of those in there befor.. I'm thinking the pullrope is the culprit but like was already stated its brand tha fiddlesticks new.. take it back!! thats what i would do..

Yeah its in the case. Kinda weird.. I know, I'm not a fan of pullstarts either.. Thats why I still have the roto start on my savage and I really like it. But again this is a buddies of mine. I dont know where he got it and I can't seem to find the one way bearing anywhere.. My LHS was dumbfounded when I mentioned it to them, they had a weird look on there face and were like "Gs? Whos that?" and Tower didnt carry Gs either.. Whats the deal? Where can I get one of these? Anyone know?

I would go with the starter box idea too. The other option would be to replace the original motor with something a little more common so he doesn't have to go through the problem of trying to find parts for it when something goes wrong. You could get a Tiger Drive system to replace the pull start but if the OWB is in the crank case rather than the PS housing, then a Tiger Drive may not work either.

well since I am not a racer I like the Pullstart on my buggies. No need to lug it to the SB , just carry an ignitor and get her started again. Both mills I have are P/S and the newest one coming will be the only one that isn't.

Like I said, its not mine. I'm just trying to figure out what the prob is so I can get it fixed for him. If it was mine, I would get a starter box, But I'm not sure what he wants to do, and I would guess he just wants to get it fixed and run it. Hes not a racer or a serious Rcer, so I dont think he wants to drop alot of ching into it. Now Ill just have to see when I can find some Gs parts..

The Omega Picco 21 xt has an internal one waywith an extension to the Pullstart as well as the GS bo1 and bo2. Not too fond of those types since you have to remove the backplate to de goo them.

It wasn't to gooed up since its still only going thru the break thru, but it still sucks..lol.. Sucks worse trying to fing a OWB for it... geezuz

It's binding up somwhere.

I've had engines with both internal and external oneways (in reference to the crank case). I prefer the external as you can drill a small hole in the starter housing and squirt wd-40 in it to get you going when it gums up. The internal ones seem to have a smaller starter housing as well. At least compairing my OS 21 to my Omega 21.

I'd check the starter housing for blemishes to see if something is rubbing. Try loosening the screws a little like arawok said. If that fixes your problem, then it's obviously rubbing somewhere. As you use the pull start, you have plastic rubbing against plastic, so little plastic dust gets in between things and could cause it to bind.

Since your new to nitro's or at least pull-starts, it's hard to suggest taking the pull starter completely apart as it's a pain to put back together. After a few times of doing it though, it gets easier. If it were mine, I'd have the rope wheel out, the recoil spring out and clean everything while looking for spots that may have been rubbing.

Thats where I'm at right now. But when I take the one way bearing and put it on the shaft, it should catch shouldnt it? I can spin it both way freely without it catching at all.. Everything else still looks like brand new, (Which it is) and I dont see any marks or scuffs anywhere..

If the one-way spins in both directions, it's life is over. Odd though, beings it's not that old.

Did you clean it and oil it? I take a paper towel, twist it so it's small enough to fit inside the bearing, spray it with alcohol, then spin the bearing forward and backward on the wet towel. Dry it out with compressed air, then put some 3-in-1 on it.

If it still doesn't grab in one direction or the other, it's dead.
