i just bought a jato 3.3
I'm lookin to do some offroading but loved the power and look my the jato
what can i do to better prepare it for the dirty and some serious jumps that it doesn't already include

Maybe more off road type tires than what comes on it. I run 1/8 buggy wheels/tires with adapters, but there are quite a few more agressive tread tires out there for the stock wheels.

I'd seek out a more stout roll bar or at least a rear wing. Especially with the 3.3 as it's so tall. One bad roof landing and you can kiss your crank case good bye.

Also, you can make a plate (or buy something) to tie the tops of the two inner/upper tie rod ends together to make it more stout. I made a steel plate for mine and never had a problem:

Huh, new era makes a few things I'd suggest... and should probably just buy myself so I have proper fitment:
Front brace noted above: http://www.neweramodels.com/item.cgi?session_id=&part_id=9410
Rear brace for the same thing but on the rear: http://www.neweramodels.com/item.cgi?session_id=&part_id=9411
Made one of those out of steel as well... doesn't look as nice as new era's though. I busted the ears off the trans while cartwheeling.

And an upper tray brace: http://www.neweramodels.com/item.cgi?session_id=&part_id=3050

I busted my upper tray once... made a steel plate for that too. ;)

I'd also suggest RPM arms. I never ran stock arms, but I've beat the living snot out of my jato and the only thing I keep breaking is crank cases from too big of air and it slapping the ground so hard. Had to stiffen up my oil and springs to hopefully avoid busting another next year... so far I've busted 4.

You may want to investigate a spring mounted header as well. I use an associated on-road header that I had to mangle/tweak to fit, but the stock one fails like the revo ones do. When you land hard, the shock cracks the header right where it bolts to the engine, then your day is done.

Almost forgot, an RPM front bumper is almost a requirement as well. However, I found that it turns the jato into a bit of a lawn dart, but it does help protect the front end more than the stock one. There's another company that makes one I'll probably buy that curves up more. If I find it again, I'll post the link so you have it.

EDIT:
Found it, it's t-bone racing:

That will be the one I buy next when I bust my RPM one... I'm on my second RPM bumper.

thank you

much appreciated ill have my jato in 5-7 buisness days:P
and thatll gie me some time to get the need things..
but you do think that itll make a nice off-road truck once i make those modifications?

A buddy of mine is running stampede wheels and tires on his jato for off road use and they seem to work pretty damn good. The fronts hardly touch the ground. Other than that he is running RPM a-arms all around and and RPM bumper too. Have fun with the Jato. They are a blast.

I think it will help you. Basically, I just gave you the list of stuff I did to mine as I busted things. I only usually replace things when they are in need of something better to make it more durable.

I'd be afraid of the extra leverage caused by that large of a wheel. With that much leverage, a nasty cartwheel could rip the hinge pins through the RPM arms. Any idea how his holds up to nasty spills?

It has taken quite a few hard tumbles and nothing broken yet.

How does it stop? Mine has a hard time when I ran stock wheels or 2.2 wheels and it still has a hard time with 1/8 buggy wheels/tires. The brakes on the jato really leave something to be desired...

Pretty it did leave some to be desired until he added the AL brake arm and 2 disk setup on it.

I really need to do that mod to mine... If it works well enough to stop those tires, then it's got to work for me with my "truggy" tires. I'm currently running OFNA old school truggy tires on mine. It just doesn't stop worth a hoot though.

I only have them on the rear at the moment. They give pretty good traction on a variety of surfaces and add some much needed ground clearance in the rear.

I'm also reading the tuning.. being as this is my first nitro and i started out with a 3.3 nitro at that... am i in for some trouble or what?

You will have your hands full with that truck. The Traxxas 3.3 motors take a tune pretty well in my experience.

And like i said above the dual brake kit and aluminum brake arm really help the truck stop well even with big tires.

Enjoy.
