for a 4x4 rustler should i get a metal or plastic?

Agree. My crawler, locked axles and full 4x4 with torque motor and tranny is on its second spur in 4 or so years.Theres only 1 time in 100 you should ever use a metal spur. Go Plastic
the rustlers a mod 0.8 but i stripped another one today within 20 minutes of putting it on must be me the mesh was set perfectlyA great composite 32P/Mod 0.8, or Mod 1 gear, that has the mesh just right, can handle lots of power. I even went a couple of months on a chewed up composite 32P spur gear. I wanted to see just how far I could go.

Changed the motor out and kept the same spur gear...

The only time that I ever used a metal spur gear is on my 1/8 scale monster truggy. Running crazy 6S power through a heavy RC like that calls for something stronger I guess.
Maybe loosen your slipper just a tad. You are probably on the throttle when landing, or during rough driving and the tires are losing and grabbing traction, straining your drivetrain.the rustlers a mod 0.8 but i stripped another one today within 20 minutes of putting it on must be me the mesh was set perfectly
If your plastic spur melted then theres an issue in your driveline. Thats why you use plastic spurs so you can detect and fix those issues before you tear up metal gears inside your transmission/diffs.I’ve had plastic gears melt from the clutch so I went metal.
Well, we all know that the stock Traxxas electronics arent that good but Instead of trying to use your slipper to pull wheelies, just drops a couple/few teeth on your pinion and youll be able to pull wheelies much easier without having to over tighten your slipperI like plastic spur gears but I have to admit, on Traxxas models they can be problematic, mostly because of 2 reasons.
Slipper is not very easy to adjust, to find a good setting where it will pull wheelies and not strip spur gear.
Second is vilenion esc, it doesn't have linear brake. When you break usually it behaves ok, but sometimes it decides to lock the motor instantaneous. I stripped multiple spur gears on Traxxas models but only when I break, not when I jump or accelerate.
At the end of this video I stripped spur gear while breaking. And i was not doing anything crazy. Obviously slipper was tighter than optimal.
Well, no matter what the pinion is, car will require certain amount of torque to pull wheelies, so smaller pinion will reduce top speed, but not really a torque required. Btw it's a stock pinion.Well, we all know that the stock Traxxas electronics arent that good but Instead of trying to use your slipper to pull wheelies, just drops a couple/few teeth on your pinion and youll be able to pull wheelies much easier without having to over tighten your slipper
i have a traxxas upgrade mount but i need a dust cover so rocks dont get into the spurMaybe loosen your slipper just a tad. You are probably on the throttle when landing, or during rough driving and the tires are losing and grabbing traction, straining your drivetrain.
For the mesh, use a sheet of paper between the gears, and get the paper tight in there and tighten the motor screws. I usually set it without the paper and just try for the slightest bit of play when I rock the spur on the pinion.
Metal spurs have their place, but I never use them for .8 mod applications. 32p and up, it's a much better bet. I have used metal spurs without any issues. The problem lies in the motor mount. All that weight, hanging onto a thin piece of plastic with two screws. Plastic flexes, and that along with metal spurs can cause problems. Even the motor mounts that have a thin aluminum plate will allow some flex, creating mesh deviation under stress.
