Just remind her that the MS Money files can be replaced/figured out, the pictures are not replaceable and obviously the most important files.

And ask her, if she decides to 'off' you, can I come out and finish building your track? :hehe:

Hell, if that is all it takes to get some help with this track, I would have had her off me a long time ago! LOL

Glad to hear you recovered the pics! Now your only facing a possible beat down instead of a guaranteed painful death LOL.

I use photobucket for all my important pictures, and have them send me a backup set of discs about every month or so. I just started doing it and it's going to be nice to have them. Welcome to the world of digital data storage. I think the humans are becoming to dependent on it, because while it's convenient to store data digitally, it's also easy to get rid of data digitally lol.

I know you already realize this, but I always store things more important than other things (like the birth of your daughter, pics of the kids, pics of your RC collection lol) on a hard drive that I only use for that, as someone else said, because so much can go wrong on the hard drive that you use everyday that isn't in your control, this just didn't happen to be one of them.

On a side note, you can always take more pics of the kids, you didn't lose your VRC setup files did you?!?!

Nope! VRC is on my laptop. I just wish I had time to get online and race you guys. Just didn't work out for me this year. I know I have said this before... but maybe next season... or maybe a winter session? I just had no idea how much time taking care of a baby would take. I know ..... laugh now! LOL

I can only imagine how the knot tightened in your stomach once you realized what happened. I run 2 HDs, and one of them routinely backs up automatically. I also have a bay with another external HD that I push in about an inch, back up my photos and music when ever I add any, then pull it out one inch and disconnect it. There's a blue light on it that gets my attention, so I NEVER leave it powered up. Whatever goes wrong, I have 3 HD copies and CDs.

I had good luck with GetDataBack, after my main disk's master boot record swallowed its tongue, once. Hope you manage to recover all your files. I've been known to run anywhere from two to four hard drives, so I get downright paranoid when selecting what disk and partition to format, when I reinstall Windows.

There's something to be said for DVD burners, and high capacity thumb drives.

Are you speaking of the HP Pocket Media Drive Bay? I've been wondering how that would work for backups, but I don't think they have a drive for it big enough to handle my stuff.

External website, dvd copies in both a fireproof safe and in a postal safe box...NEVER keep important things on a pc that you use regularly, and never only have 1 copy in 1 centralized location. Always have a backup somewhere distant from your main data files. In the event of a natural disaster or house fire, your backup files will be safe in their home at the bank or post office. When I did bookkeeping we always backed up our data on tape and sent 1 copy home with the owner's wife and the other copy stayed in a giant vault. Believe it or not, this came in handy...as we lost everything one day due to a server crash one week followed by a backup server crash the next...bad times.

I hope you recover everything, and may the force be with you if not.

Being a computer geek myself I have to say I agree with all the above but still find myself not doing it. I have a fire proof safe, but don't use it to store backups, I have a DVD burner but don't have only used it once or twice to backup important data.

I tell everyone all the time to make sure they backup their data, then find myself not doing it.

The only thing I have automated backup is the server to which this site sits on. The server is located in Dallas, TX and is backed up every night at 2 or 3am to an off site server in New York, NY. This way if I piss off our host or a natural disaster occurs I still have my data. The new server will be setup the exact same way but will also feature onsite backup in terms of a disk RAID.

Now if only I could get myself to do the same with my personal pc.

I went out and got a cheap ass external Netgear SC101 network RAID. The cabinet was 35.00 on sale and the 3 250 gig drives were dirt cheap. I keep my data and photos on them. If one of the two drives goes bad, I have a 3rd one to stick in.

I upon occasion transfer my data files to a local directory just in case. Only issue I have is if the place burns down. If that happens, Ill be rich so it doesn't matter.

Or if Rolex farts in the server room again. The RAID must be for those bugs that the flatulence of Ralph attracts over time :hehe:

Hey, the last time I did that I replaced the entire power grid...

Guys I am dead!

As soon as the 24 hour recover process finished.... the External HD started beeping and clicking. All of the data I was able to preview while the recovery was running, all of a sudden was showing as corrupt. The external Drive was no longer showing up in Windows as a recognized device. I don't know what the hell happened. The damn thing ran for 24 hours straight and never had a problem while the recovery ran.... why did the drive have to fail while I was staring the "save" process? I don't know what the hell to do now. My wife is livid.

Yeah... things normally take a dump at the exact point in the mouse senses your finger hovering over the button...

I don't know what the hell to do now. My wife is livid.

I know the feeling though. I had a malware incident Saterday that cost me 10+ hours of my life. Just as I was minimizing FF to go get a soda, I get 50 popups saying I have a virus problem, do I want to download virus and malware protection software... and my screen changed to red and all my file names said "VIRUS ALERT" when I looked at windows explorer or DOS... I thought I was going to throw up.

Sounds like the data is really important to you. It may be in your best interest to take it to a pro and get it handled before one of the pieces of software you try makes everything non-recoverable.

I'm thinking you need to take it straight to the professionals like said above. Something you could try to run on it might overwrite some spot and make a fixable problem a... well in your case a death sentence.
