I had a nice talk with my LHS and they gave me an over view of the two types of airbrushes.

Single action and Double action. Sometimes reminds of my handguns that I bought years ago. From what I hear the Double action hand...airbrush is the one I want as it allows more control of the paint that comes out by how and when it comes out. Looks like I will be spending close to 300-400 dollars including a nice compressor with an auto shut off valve.

What are you guys that paint use? Opinions?

I would highly recommend a dual-action. I actually own both a single and a dual. I rarely use the single now. If I do, it's just for broad coverage where I don't need any real control. I have a Paasche VL set and it works well for me. I also know that Badger and Iwata make good brushes. If you're looking online for a brush try ebay, www.dixieart.com or www.bearair.com.

As far as a compressor goes, I use a standard size 13 gallon Cambell/Hausfeld compressor that has a regulator built in. Then I just added an inline moisture trap and it works great. Will pressurize the tank to 125 psi and the 13 gal is usually enough to do one body. No matter what compressor you get, you must have a regulator and a moisture trap. No question about that.

300-400 bucks what are you buying gold plated stuff????
Well at my LHS the brush I am loooking it is 150 and the compressor is 250. It is tiny enough to store under a 12" high support beam. Again I am still looking. The number I gave out is just a ballpark figure.

Guess it depends on the compressor, actually. My airbrush set was only like $60 for the Paasche, but I spent $275 on the compressor set because I planned on using it at home for other reasons. For that price, it came with an impact driver, die grinder, cutoff tool, full size airbrush, air gun, pneumatic caulking gun and a few other things. I also got a pneumatic brad nailer and air rachet so I can do a lot of handy work around the house. Well worth it. I recommend thinking of it that way. So not only will you airbrush with the compressor, you can use it for tons of things around the house.

LOL if you shop around you can get a good set up for a little over 100 bucks. I have a Badger 150 its the double action sprayer and it works awesome. I bought it new on ebay for 35 bucks. Harborfreight tools carrys a awesome airbrush compressor that run around 60 bucks and comes with everything including the moister trap. I have had mine for about 3 yrs and havent had a problem with it at all.

candyman U got a link to where to get the compressor...and is it 110 or 12vdc...I need a compressor for the track too...would that be a decent one for both purposes?
and do you VL pro or VLS set....I'm looking to get set up like jon is talking...I need pretty much the whole shooting match...I do have a small 12vDC comp made for industrial use......it's old but it runs well and quiet......I was gooing to hook it up to a tank and get some hoses for a small set up but after seeing the prices on the first link you posted I think I might want a new comp too.....

I have a real cheap Paasche. Its just a single action but does its job. I figured Id get a cheap one to see if I had the patients and liked it before I dropped some ching for a nice one. A nice one is coming soon though I think. This ones spray doesn't get as narrow as Id like, but I've got my money out of it.

I got a pretty nice compressor at Sears for under $150, bought a water trap at Home Depot for $20, as well as a few other handy items. The small compressors made just for painting are nice but having compressed air to clean my savage and r40 off, along with all the computers I get to work on, is well worth the larger size and extra noise.

Jon,
Costco has a decent compressor for $125.00.
I know there is a Harbor freight somewhere in your neck of the woods. They always have something on sale. I got my moisture trap there as well. They have a curly hose and all sorts of fittings and gadgets in a package for under $20.00.

Ed,
Thanks for the tip and everyone else as well. I have a Moisture trap for one already. I am going to see if I can mate the curly cord to the standard heavy duty one so I can plumb it properly into my workstation.

The HF store will be on my list of stores to check out.

Thanks fellas

Jon

gwt an iwata hp-c 120 double action gair lines very nice airbrush

Hey jon,
Get the dual action. You won't be satisfied with the single. Just sprays one pattern, not enough control. Just bought this one. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LX8157&P=ML Don't know much about an airbrush, but it got good reveiws. Been practicing with it a little and think it is going to fit my needs. The Iwata airbrushes are supposed to be the best from what I have read. I didn't need to get that serious.
I also put one of the disposable filters on mine. About $10 for 2.

jon, you said the airbrush that you're looking at is $150 at the hobby shop. What kind is it? For that $$$ I would hope it's really high end.

Its a Badger model. Not sure of which model though. It was supposed to be the top of the line that they carry. That is why I need feedback.
