I did a search on here for related posts...there is 1 mention. I can't be the only 1 who has 1 of these??

I had it out today doing a little walk and bash through the woods. There is also some great pavement in front of where I park so I did a quick speed run. 18mph top speed.

I moved the distance out to 132 for the 1/10 quarter mile since that is what I will be using soon enough.
I have left it mostly stock and plan to. I did change the pinion to a steel 26t from the plastic 27t. I spent some time filing the spur gear everyone complains about, not perfect but it's good enough I won't be buy the $30 delrin upgrade till this wears out. I changed the shock oil in the back to traxxas 50wt. Which has worked pretty well...may go to 60 if I happen to pick some up at some point.
I made a quick video if you wanna skip any commentary and just get right to what the gearbox sounds like 1.25 minutes in is close enough.

I thought about buying one to see how far I could push it... I think once the bugs are worked out, it could be a pretty fast little buggy. 😎
In (mostly) stock form, the car still looks like a lot of fun! Like you said, its super low dollar fun that any noob can run, learn on, crash without much regret... pretty perfect for a younger kid too! 👍
I think the plastic pinion and spur issues really put a lot of ppl off of this car.

I'm glad you're still loving Kyosho all these years later!!! Same here! 😁

(Kyosho RULES!!!!🤫😉)

I forgot I did add a heatsink fan combo....it was sitting there after there was no room for it on the drag car. There was almost no room to get it in here either....View attachment 255851
Was it running hot? Was that before or after the gear change?
I bet its cooler now! 👍

It does look pretty tight! 😲

How does the roll bar feel? Is it going to break on impact, say a hard roll over? It looks thicker than I'd imagined it would be too. 😎

I am rather impressed right now! I hope you keep going with this car. I'd love to hear how durability is over extended use and what upgrades were needed to make it durable or more fun... 😍

Sent it onto the roof a bunch today running out 2 5000mah batteries. Pulled a bunch of sticks out places they shouldn't be etc. Worst that happened 1 of the shock bottoms shifted and had to be put back on the post.
The front shocks no one mentions.....but

You can see how the roll bar runs right behind them....that means you can't use those 2nd mounting holes cause it hits...and they are coil over, but there is a section of the thread that is useless because the adjuster ring also hits. So you have room above and below, but where the cage is the shock won't reach either mounting hole up top. Fortunately the front shocks needed more preload and are at a point where they can be installed.

That shock and bar issue look to be a pain.
I like to set up with lighter oil and springs whenever possible. It looks like my sweet spot is unlikely without finding shorter springs.

Seems like it was doing well enough on mixed wooded terrain like yours is set now. 👍😎

I like the cage!😍

Figures it would be an issue! 🤣

This was a big selling point for me. The price...and that bit about many parts from the previous versions of the sandmaster are interchangeable with this model direct from kyosho. I don't imagine finding any spring you would want would be hard.

@CertifiedMike I never got back to you before...there was nothing with the temp on the car that had me add the heatsink and fan....it was there on the bench with the car ....now it's on the car. I ran it around last night. Took the temp before I went out ...low 70s....outside air plus the fan and 10 minutes of driving...down to 61

What were Kyosho thinking with the plastic gears? I bought a nib Nitro Brute back in the 80's. They actually put a plastic clutch bell housing with sandpaper glued to the inside for the shoes to grip. After building the kit, I never ran it. Traded it for a Clod Buster. I was racing 1/8 scale RC 500's at the time and had zero faith in a plastic clutch.

I hear ya....at the price I expect a little nonsense to deal with though

That thing probably runs better, handles better than my first RC. For $99, I'd have no guilt running it. If the composites are good, send it! The tranny sounding a bit rough... just needs broken-in. Let 'er rip! :thumbs-up:

I don't really consider this a mod per say, just good practice with a brushed motor. I remember the old days....and still see it sometimes, but this did not come with a capacitor soldered across the motor....so I added 1 to protect against voltage spikes during braking etc.

It's oversized for the application so I did not bother with the other 2 that usually go from the leads to ground on the side of the can.

I saw that. I was wondering about different tooth count for it. $30 seems like ALL the $$$ for that gear.

I am thinking about maybe buying one of these too. 🤔
I don't plan to change the gear till it is worn. Most stuff on this car I will probably only fix or upgrade when it breaks. Which is what I want from an rtr. If the gear noise bothers you....drive further away, lol
