how does one do a fade with rattle cans?

You can get thin pieces of lexan to practice on.

For testing and practice, I use clear plastic, disposable bowls from a dollar store.

I just went for it on this one.

I basically started the spray off the car then went over it and past in a quick motion. The paint is very light and needs another coat but I just use this as a dust cover anyway. You can literally spot spray where you want the faded color to be.
I like the plastic bowl idea for practice.

Looks good dude!

any suggestions on paints? i want a deep purple and a shiny gold, but i think that candy rootbeer would look good instead of gold, I'm not sure if there are rattle cans that can get me the colors i want.
would any specific brand or color be closer to this other than say purple and gold I'm sleepy I'm repeating myself ugh

I don't know of any that are specifically gold to purple. And Spaz Stix is the only color change paint I know of for lexan that comes in an aerosol can.

I'm not looking for color change paint to be clear. there isnt one I've found that does the change I'm interested in and i dont actually want it to change i want it more like a 2 tone fade type
I'm going to be using purple AND gold
i was wondering this time if anyone had a prefrence, as in product A has a great gold spray or these 2 purples together will achieve that color type inquiry

Tamiya, while STUPID expensive for the amount of paint they give you, has a lot of options, and is good paint. But any of the other brands of lexan paint should be fine. Spaz Stix, Pro-Line, Duratrax, Traxxas, etc. Any of it should be fine. Just make sure if you are mixing brands they are compatible.

I can't speak for or against other brands but Tamiya polycarbonate sp has ALWAYS been reliable, good results for my not high skill level.
They just don’t give you enough paint in that can!!

That's why I went to an airbrush. You can paint multiple bodies with one 2oz bottle of paint, whereas with a Tamiya rattle can, you typically need two cans to do a body. It's good paint, but not good enough to justify spending $20 to paint one body.

Oh good. A new reason to justify another R/C investment!
But but but I NEEEEEED an airbrush... 🤣

I sort of always saw an airbrush as an artsy fartsy sort of thing. I am not so skilled like that but but when it breaks, I can have it back running in 10! 🤣
I never saw the costs of paint as resonable incentive.
With practice and better equipment I'm likely to get better results...🤔
DAMNIT!!!
Time for research!

After doing my latest one with a trigger detail gun, I ordered an airbrush. Seems easy enough to me

What did you get?
The iwata revolution, I found one for about $85 which is a great deal, I think they retail for $120. I almost got the neo which is about $70.

3 decades ago I remember Badger being THE brand.
How much work is it to maintain airbrushes and is there a reason to have more than 1 brush?
Like are nozzels easy to change for wide cover vs detail or is that an adjustment?
Would multi color jobs be easier/faster with 2 brushes or is it just twice the work?

Maybe we can discuss this in a thread that doesn't specifically mention "rattle can"? 🤣

Sorry @majin !!!
