I've started to graduate myself from Safe mode (self-leveling, flight control limits) to Experienced mode (no self-leveling, full flight control movement) on my Aeroscout. I've done some barrel rolls and loops, and now I want to experiment with flying sideways and upside down -- without crashing (obviously). I've played around on my RealFlight simulator, but things move so fast that I can't figure out how to do these two maneuvers. I looked on Youtube and didn't find anything either, although I would think there are some videos on it.

I know that you need to work the ailerons to roll the plane. And I am assuming that you also need to work the rudder and/or elevator to stabilize it and keep it on a level horizontal plane as well. That's the part I cannot figure out; what direction to move the elevator and/or rudder to keep the plane flying straight when sideways or upside down.

If there are simple answers, let me know. (e.g., when flying sideways, move the rudder xxxxx direction; when flying upside down, move the rudder up (stick down). I am assuming it's somewhat formulaic, but I don't know the routine.

Then I will start trying it on the simulator. If there are any videos that explain not only how to do it, but explain the aerodynamics behind it, that would be great, so let me know.

Thanks

The best way to learn it is go out and try it bud. Get your plane up high enough you can recover if you lose control.
Easy to turn upside down using your ailerons. The tricky parts is to remember down lever makes it go up and up lever makes it go down.
It's just the opposite of normal.

One aileron up and the other one down will get you sideways and if you keep holding it, will get you upside down.

Also when sideways use your rudder for elevation and your elevator for left and right.
Takes practice but you'll get there.

Thanks. That part I know. But don't you need to work the elevator and/or rudder to maintain the sideways or upside down position once you assume that position? Or is my assumption wrong, and can you fly sideways and upside down with the rudder and elevator in a neutral position, the same as when you are rightside up?

Once inverted you will need to continue input, or it will not maintain a level flight path. You will need to push your stick forward a bit to keep it level.

Tricky at first but eventually you will be able to fly a full circuit around your flying field inverted. Just takes some practice.

Yes, I mentioned that above. When flying sideways you use the rudder for elevation and you use the elevator for left and right.
Also it will fly in that position until you tell it different with your controls.

Thanks, good advice. Will try that.

Thanks. That's going to take some work on my part. Think I may start with the upside down first!

Hell, try a lumpchavock. Then you know will know true big boy aerobatics.
