Can you tell which is "new" and which has been paint corrected?!?

I've been recording the finishing of these parts to put together a video series. So far I have edited three episodes.

The vids are great! I'll have to figure out if I use this method on the 3d printed crawler body I just purchased.
Do you know what material your H10 body was printed on? Even as a print, before filling, It looked pretty smooth. Nice work!

The prints on the table were done by TallBoi Designs on FB, he's local to me.

The body on the Optic was provided by Cliff McCrawl Industries, I believe both are ABS.

If I had to find a medium to explain I would say the resolution on the free ones looked like 8 bit NES games compared to the PS5 prints from TBD.

I believe TBD really prides himself on the quality and it shows. All that being said I am very pleased with the service from McCrawl and I don't want to rag on a free part that was shipped to me. Just trying to be transparent

Thanks for the info! I've been researching 3D printers. Been looking more into material types and how to get quality smooth prints so I can get a paint finish like your Optic.
You did a really stellar job. Just goes to show again how important prep work is in painting.
I'm more patient (on my artwork at least. I'm quite impatient otherwise ) in my older years and I can say paint quality has dramatically improved with my patience with taking my time in the prep.

@CreepyQuarryCrawler My space crawler body for my next build is really clean. Been debating on going further on finish once I get to that part of the build process.

Only a few imperfections on the hood. You can see lines (to be expected), but it is smooth.

You learn so much over time, you know? Like, my wiring has changed so much over the years.
My first ever car caught on fire due to one of my wiring disasters (add water). Thankfully I was able to toss the amp out before it got much worse.

It's crazy how deceptive 3D prints can be!!
In your first photo, looking dead at the nose it looks perfectly smooth, then the over head tells on itself.

The nice thing with that theme too is you can be selective on leaving texture and it wouldn't be out of place on a Moon Buggy type craft

I'm the same, I still rush the last 5% it seems, just cuz I know how close to done I am.

The corner edges of the hood on the space crawler need smoothing, should be easy. Once I get the build done, I think I'll have a better idea on if I want to paint it and maybe have a good theme for it then. Also considering leaving the blue/grey and trying weather.

Those shots are fantastic! Rig of the month quality for sure! I love the stance of the H10. Planning for some similar on the space crawler. It looks like it performs extremely well.

T'was to be expected, right? I saved it the first time, I had to try that same climb again lol

I didn't get it on film but it fell and as it landed, it hit that front corner first but on the tire, I pinned it and saved it. Second time, not so lucky.

Ah well, it's a runner

Adds authenticity, crawlers are supposed to get scuffed up. That's why you took all of those pretty pictures right after you painted it.

Some new scale bits just showed up for the Optic. Time to get painting!!

Added a few bits of wire and a tiny grommet where they pass through the mount.

Whoever designed this print has the layout flipped 180. You would want the caps and the master cylinder facing the other way. I didn't notice until now with it mounted.

It's gonna drive me nuts LOL

Engine bay turned out how I was envisioning.
I went with the engine cover that had room for a servo as I am considering switching things up in the future so I wanted the option.

Unfortunately I broke the inner liners trying to install one

I'll talk to my friend and see if he can print them in black for me and maybe a softer material? I dunno.

He's on holidays so I'll reach out in a few weeks.

The lights are still incomplete. I have the buckets but I haven't done anything with them. I think that's the next challenge. Oh, and I am trying to decide what's the best move to "repair" the nose scratch.

Just lay some paint down in a container and brush a small amount on?

I'm not looking for perfection, just hide it a tiny amount.

Update:

Progress has been made!

And final, sitting on the wheels and tires

Look at the turning angle!

The wheel base looked kinda off to me until you turn the wheels; the tire tucks in that opening of the cage perfectly! And looking at post #46 the wheelbase looks close.

Plus I need room for the BTA servo

I've ordered the mount, just gotta wait for it to come in.

Then I'll take it back to the same spot and I'll take new photos so we can see the visual difference.

Got the BTA servo mount on and the axle mocked up under the truck.

Just need a smidge more room, it's contacting the gear cover.

I went into my bag of links from the swap and switched out the front uppers for now.

That pushed the axle out and clocked it a bit.

Look at the U Joint angle

Everything rotates smooth and nothing rubs but I'll have to refine it.

The horn hits the cross member at about the exact point the shocks bottom out.

Finally got it completed!!

I tried various Vanquish links between the Stance and the Optic.

I settled on the original front uppers that came on the Optic, they just needed to be bumped out some.

This is the only spot I used a non Vanquish part to get the job done.

Changing the upper rod end was all that is required to modify. I ended up on a link length of 132mm eyelet to eyelet. Traxxas part number is 5525.

The width ended up extremely close

We still maintained the 50/50 side to side

I ended up swapping a bunch of stuff over from the Stance;

- Shocks
- F10 Portal Axles F/R
- Complete rear link setup

It certainly makes it simple if you have a donor chassis.

Other details that I ran into was center driveshaft length; the front became too short. To solve this I ended up swapping trans outputs and diff inputs to get the correct lengths in the right spots.

It all went together so well! It was honestly quite simple to do.

I still have lots of tuning headroom to go, I just want to run it the way it is before I change anything else.

Besides the obvious I have different wheels on now with brass hubs and a brake disc detail.
I can swap the rear hubs to aluminum if necessary.

Next up is to go back to the quarry this week and run it through the same lines I did earlier.

I am going to remove the cheater rock from that one climb and see if it can do it now.
