I just love this movie hope it aint a repost,it is a Ford getting :bowned: by a Dodge. Here is the link to the vid Powerjoke pulled,Hope ya ike it.

Like i always say "Id rather be Cummin then Strokin"

Dodge sucks, thats not a real test of a better truck, just which one started burning out first and allowed the other to pull it. :D Only good Dodges are the Ram SRT10 and the Viper SRT10.

Although that is a good line there nitroking...hahahaha.

Dodge may suck, but I'd rather have one than a ford.. Here's the reasons why... This is gonna be long, lol. I'm prolly missing one or two things, but it's an accurate list. :boxing:

1988 Ford F250
- rough idle caused by vacuum leak
- 4 TFI modules went through
- busted cam shaft, causing truck to loose two cylenders (has V8)
- transmission missing on upshift (automatic)
- bed rattling when rounding corners
- door trim pulling apart
- shift indicator out of adjustment ("drive" is displayed as "reverse")
- shift lever is difficult to use (hard/touchy to get into "drive")
- foam in seat falling apart
- sending units in BOTH tanks dying
- filler necks in tanks kinked (from loose bed)
- alignment severely out of whack
- brakes leak worse than a civ
- engine leaks roughly a quart every two weeks.
- windows leak
- paint was fire engine red, now a girly pink.
- alternator
- sticking throttle (nothing like braking with the engine stuck at 1/4 throttle)

1987 Merkur XR4Ti (it's a german ford escort imported by a company in Oregon called Rapido)
- 4 engines
- 2 turbo intakes
- 1 transmission (fell off going down the highway)
- 2 seats (backs broke right off)
- 2 radiators
- brake master cylender
- power steering pump
- rear end master link (car walked from side to side going down the road)
- TFI modules (7 of them)
- the shaft that the Distributer cap rides on (gear broke off the end)

1982 Mercury (made by ford)
- 1 engine
- window regulator/glass tracks

So, you see, I will NEVER own a ford. All these were owned by my parents. These cars were never mistreated.

Personally, I have a 92 oldsmobile achieva (looks like a pontiac sunfire of the same year) - Ya never hear about THOSE breaking down (just running out of gas). :boxing:

ps; I know Olds went outta business; they just weren't breaking down so people weren't buying more of 'em, so the greedy execs cancelled the line. :smoke:

edit; forgot to add; they (parents) presently own and drive a 2000 Honda Civic and a 55 Chevy 3/4 ton dually flatbed. Both NEVER break down.

The new Dodge Magnum is very cool and the SRT-8 cars are killer.

AC I wouldn't knock dodge too much...aren't you driving a 3000GT????
ahem take a look at the same year's stealth....

Heartbreak...

A little correction is in order here. Rapido is an aftermarket parts supplier for the Merkur line, they did NOT import them.

Merkur's were sold NEW through Lincoln-Mercury dealers (I was a certified Merkur tech at one time) just like the Pantera was years ago.

The XR4Ti is NOT an Escort. The Escort is also available in Europe as a, wait for it, an Escort.

The XR4Ti is called a Sierra in Europe, but Ford couldn't call it a Sierra since Oldsmobile had a copywrite on the various spellings of the name. So they called it a Merkur (German for Mercury)...

They were imported from '85 to '88 1/2 model years. The Scorpio, the four door touring model was available in the US for a while as well...

Most problems with the Merkur were from untrained service personell and first time European car owners not used to German engineering...

Holler if you have any questions on it...

EDIT- Woops, I see you don't own it anymore... Nevermind...

Dodge sucks...I have owned a couple of them so I speak from experience and this is why...This will be short

1. they are plagued with just as many problems as any other vehicle but cost more to fix

2. 90% of the parts are considered dealer items which is why #1 is true.

Do I really need to bring up the tranny thing?

I wouldn't mind owning any other full size truck but I would never buy a Dodge.

My mistake there, but if memory serves, they have a reselling program for merkurs. I must have confused that over the years (it hasn't been a real priority for me to remember that car, as ya can guess).

No, but they share the same body-type as that years escort. That much I remember about it.

I was wondering about the history of the XR4Ti

knew that part. Why did they stop importing them?

I'll second that - all of the shops it was taken to literally didn't know the fuel injectors from spark plugs.

I don't miss it, either (no offense). :) That car was more of a lemon than an Edsel.

edit; speaking of which, if you know of someone that wants a service manual (not a chiltons, but the REAL service manual), shoot me a PM - i'll have to look for it, but I know it's still around here somewhere.

Hey, watch the vid again, if you notice, on the seccond time, they give the ford a head start...

Mustang Man, you caught it before I could post.

In all cases, an Escort is an Escort, whether over there or over here. Whether it had SIMILAR appearances to an Escort, a Merkur is definately not an Escort, no matter what the year. First of all, other than the mechanical differences, the sizes were much different.

BTW, the Jaguar X-Type sedan is based very closely on the European version of the Ford Contour, known as the Mondeo over in Britain. Just think, pay triple the cost and get one of Ford's worst cars. My wife had a Contour as a company car. What a gutless, ill handling turd that thing was. I did drive the new X-Type. Since all wheel drive is standard, and it comes with an optional 3.0 liter V6 it does seem like a decent car, but knowing it's legacy with the Contour chassis, I would have a hard time shelling out 42,000.00 on that car.

Anyhow, food for fodder. In the motorhome world, there are only two makers of gas engined Class A motorhomes, Ford and Workhorse (Originally GM, and now GM/Allison supported).

The dealers can hardly sell the Ford chassised MH's. At the RV shows you can buy a Ford chassised Class A motorhome for 15-20K less than the Workhorse ones. Same floorplan, same length, etc., just the "box" is built on a Ford chassis instead of a WH. Makes you wonder, eh? BTW, Dodge pulled out of the Class A chassis game years ago, along with John Deere. Both Ford and GM do not make a Diesel Pusher Class A chassis directly, although Workhorse entered the game a coupe of years back with a surprisingly good first effort. I own a Freightliner chassised DP, which in roundabout ways is a Diamler/Chysler owned company. Nothing like an 8.2 liter CAT purring back there!

Now, in Class C MH's, Ford still is in the lead in the conventional class. Chevy can't even compare, and it mostly due to the transmission they use. In fact, the Chevy has a more spacious cab over the Ford. Dodge is not to be found in this category as well.

There are other Class C models we call "Super Class C's" but those are basically semi tractor chassis modded into a MH, much like you seeing hauling race teams and such, so I am not comparing those makers to conventional Class C's.

the XR4Ti was definately not an escort on ANY level....looked similar body but the dimensions were all different.....wider mostly...and I don't see how anyone who's driven one could even compare it to the escort......

Here's another flop. Remember the Sterling? It was a British made Acura Legend. Same EXACT motor, trans and general suspension as the Acura in regard to the US market, plus same size and general shape of the body. Things were literally falling off of those cars, and the Acuras had so few problems.

Plaid, I did drive a Merkur. If I remember, there were two models at the end. They had a Coupe and a 4 door hatchback kind of thing. The one I drove a coupe which had a 4 cylinder turbo motor (2.3) which is the old Pinto/Maverick/Mustang 4 banger, turbo'd. It handled great, but the motor lacked. In the later models a V6 was available, if I recall correctly. Never drove that one, but I heard they really hauled butt.

*cut all the stuff about RV's - confused me beyond all daylights*

Even tho, at the time, the guy at Rapido said that it was the German made version of the Ford Escort. Just going by what was told to me, nothin more.

But, of course, the Merkur that my parents owned was a POS'er. I wouldn't enter that car in a demo-derby.

Placed side-by-side, an Escort of the same year as that Merkur looked identical. At least, I think the 87 Escort was a hatchback... Am I wrong? (I can't remember).

All other Merkurs, on the other hand, they might be great cars in and of themselves, but I will never own one, due to the experiences had with this one (see the pit bull thread - same feelings, different things). Far too many things either falling off or imploding for it to be a worthwhile car for everyday transit... Rally racing, maybe, but not day to day driving.

edit; the merkur that my parents had, had the 2.3 turbo in it... It got up and went whenever it was able to get up and go...

*last post, before I get slapped with some spam cans*

Personally, I didn't drive it... It was my moms' car. I passed my drivers test in it, only because it was that or the 55 chevy.

Incidently, nice tip to pass a drivers test; stay up for 24+ hours, so you look nice n bombed... They will give you the EASIEST course possible... just out, a three point turn, and back.

It works best in a rural/small town office with little surrounding traffic. Just make sure you try to pass the test honestly on the first go-round (that's my disclaimer!).

Damn wish i would of know that when i took mine they gavce me the hardest test of them all and i took it in my dad 01' Dodge ram Dualy wit the Cummins Ho 6 speed and i think i scared the guy half to death when i jump on it,wit the straight 6 inch bully dog exhaust and bully dog power pack chip. All in a i failed the test cause my out rear tire touch the curb parrelle(sp?) parking. The dodges dont have any probems wit the 6 speed Transmissions it is mostly the autos when guy upgrade the engine and poop.

i like the charger but i think they could of done a better replica of the old one than they did. mustang did good replicating the old version to a new one. and pontiac, i think did horrible replicating the gto. to me it doesn't even look like it.

I failed my first road test many years ago. I didn't hit the curb, I was too far from it!10 inches is the max, I was around 16 inches from the curb. Bitch failed me on the spot! Next time I took it, I turned off the a/c in the car on purpose and said it was broken, because it was midsummer and I knew the tester would want to get out of there asap. He couldn't argue since the car was my dad's 72 Lemans. Rumbled when idling, roared just coasting down the street. I loved it!

The charger is dumb. It was never a 4 door! The GTO, well, they only brought back the name and the performance behind it. Lutz saw the car during one of the series down there and decided to bring it here. The car is actually a Monaro from Australia that is now a left hand drive. Performance wise, it's better than any GTO ever made ... even the Judge. I'll take it. I'm not a fan of the rear end, but I'm facing forward anyway.
