Okay guys - I need some opinions - I am getting ready to purchase a new mill, and it is between these two. The price difference is about 40.00 with the OS being more expensive. Is it worth it?

Fantom:
Horsepower 1.25hp
RPM max 42,500

OS
Horsepower 1.2hp
RPM max 31,000

What does this mean?
Having a higher RPM range you get a longer power curve.

The power curve on the OS is strongest from mid low rpm to mid high rpm. This gives you a performance window of around 18-20,000 rpm.

The Fantom curve is about the same but a little stronger at the higher rpms. With 42,000 rpm you get a performance window of 25-35,000 rpm.

Your gain is a performance window that is around 40% larger.

The OS will have more low end torque as the Fantom will have more high-end .

The OS will do better for a lot of Stop and Go, the Fantom for higher rpm applications.

Others please add to this.
Its easy for me to pump the fantom, I have one fore sale. :naughty:

that is my major concern. since i will be using this mill in a touring car, i am concerned about the small amount of low end grunt. acceleration is MUCH more important to me than top end, since i almost never hit speeds higher than 40mph on the tight courses i am running on. is there a way to overcome this downfall on the fantom? such as maybe having tighter springs on the clutch, to increase the RPM of engagement?

Its all in the gearing.
You will gear your car to operate on that track in the optimal part of the power band.

Your choice of gearing will keep the RPMs within the optimal range.
You will do this with any mill you get. The Fantom or any engine with a longer power curve gives you more to work with.

thanks guys, i wouls still like to see some more people's opinions who run either mill.

humboldt - i agree, and already have the pipe that produces the most low end torque

I'm in the process of breaking in my 03' Fantom FR-15, and I used to have a .15 CVR-X. I love the Fantom! They are both good engines, but the Fantom is faster and cheaper.

If you go the fantom route, make sure you get the 03 fantom. They updated the mill and the carb(which was sorely needed imho) I run the FR.15 and have had no problems with it. I know that I am not alone. Fantom has the BEST customer service anywhere. I was cautious about the ABSC Sleeve that was used in 02 after a member who used to be here, but started his own forum, complained loudly about the engine. I emailed Jeff and asked him about it. He offered to rebuild the engine to ABC for free if I wanted him to, or I could give it a shot and if I didn't like it, he would rebuild it for free. Not bad in my book. I never had to have the engine rebuilt. It is a little screamer. I did use the carb off my old pro .15(I use the fantom in my maxx), and everything is kosher. I am a fantom fan.

I tuned the carb to rich and broke it in. Is that right? I'm on the 7th tank, i want to do like about 12..

SOunds like 7 would be fine. If you are tuned rich you will hear the engine burble and lots of smoke and some unburnt fuel should spit out the pipe while under throttle. If you dont have a temp gun think about getting one. Start to lean in ver small 1/8 incremints(sp?) until the burble sounds goes away and performance increses. Be care ful not to lean to much and every time you adjust the carb it is a good rule to wait at least half a tank to make sure the engine is warm. Every time you adjust the high speed needle 1/8 turn clockwise make sure to do a couple high speed passes to see what it does and clear the engine out.
