My friends traxxas slash has started going slower losing battery faster. What could be the cause of this?

If its the brushed system, probably the motor is going and the bushings are not helping, or the clutch possibly.

If its a nimh, that could also be an issue if its on its way out.

Yep, also check for binding in the drive train.

Brushed motor wearing out, battery wearing out, dry/worn bearings/bushings, stuff wrapped around the axles behind the wheel hex's, etc. All those shorten run times and cut speed.

Took the words right outta my mouth :)
