I picked this up when I saw it on an online ad from a local kid. He sold it because the pull start broke.
I've looked around the net a bit but can't really figure out what it is. The body says 'Jammin' on the top of the windshield, but it doesn't look like the ones I see online.
The car hasn't seen much use and the engine seems to have good pinch from turning the flywheel.

The motor has Megatech on top but no engine size that I can see.

Any info you guys can offer would be appreciated. By the way, I paid $40 for the whole setup, so it can't be too bad.

Thanks!

it looks like it's a traxxas nitro rustler. I Could be way off as stadium trucks are not my area, but it does look like a "Rusty".

Darn you ron i was gonna say that. . .lol. . .but i would say a nitro rusty is what you got there buddy

Sweet!
I'm not sure there's any way of telling the engine size to get a pull start. I need to get back tires for it too. Time to go shopping!!

Thanks!

look on the side of the crank case to see if it says anything like pro .15, TRX 2.5 or TRX 2.5R and that may help you figure out what you got

I just took the pull start off and the engine has '16' on the side. So I guess I need more than just a pull start, I need the engine it bolts to, too. I'll wear this one out first, though.

Thanks!

good catch olds !

I note tower list that part as discontinued though, so does that mean the engine is discontinued aswell ?

Not a Rusty fellas, it's a Nitro Sport. The first easy give-away is the steering servo. The Rusty's is mounted sidways out the right side of the car. That one is mounted upside down in the middle of the front wheels.
Also the Rusty comes with an anno'd lower chassis plate where that one looks to be black plastic.

Here's a side view of my Rusty, notice the servo saver beside my custom mounted switch.

dang.. racer beat me to it.. a nitro sport was my first ST. they are decent little trucks, but like racer said, the main chassis is mostly plastic, with some aluminum (about 1/2 and 1/2) so it isnt as tough as a rusty. but i had a little .12 or .15 in mine and it was pretty fun.

last i checked, traxxas still had the manual, and exploded views on there website under legacy models, you may also try www.rcdocuments.com

That's why I love this site.... Lots of combined knowledge!

Still not a bad deal for $40!

as far as the pull start, a lot of the small block rigs have the same template for the mounting holes. you can try taking it off, and taking a pic of the mount area. then post it up here and see if anyone can tell you if another rigs pull starter will fit. you could also take it to a hobby shop and compare in person. I may even have a pull start from one of my now long gone nitro rigs that would work.

Thanks, beason. I compared the pull start to others at the LHS and it's exactly like a standard Traxxas one as far as size and the bolt pattern, but the center is a female hex shape instead of the 'flat sided oval' shape of TRX engines.

I've looked all over the net, there are simply no more out there from Megatech...

Does anyone know if any other brand has a hexagonal center?

I think Team Associated has that setup on their .15 Rc10Gt engines. Not 100% sure though. It's been a long time since I've messed with one.

What's broke? The rope? Do you have the handle? You can always just repair the one you do have. Since you have the housing, spool and appears to have the spring, a new rope/handle with a bit of effort can make it work again.

I only suggest this since I can't seem to find a pull-starter in stock anywhere for your engine. I've rewound plenty of recoils with minimal fuss. Just take your time.

I can suggest this rope repair myself, as i have done it on a fair amount of occasions. In the end, i used bathroom light pull cord as it is cheap and you can get at least two replacement pull start cords out of one length depending on the engine. You simoply have to be aware of which way the cord sits on the spool so that it rortates the engine in the correct direction.

IME, a pull start cord usually turns the starter spool clockwise looking from the back of the engine and should be wound so as to allow this.

Alternatively, a tiger drive backplate and wand, or a similar prioduct would replace the pull start and give a roto-start style system saving you keep yanking on the starter when you want to run the rig.

if the rebuild fails, all yo have to do is change the one way bearing to the trx oval shaped one, and you will be set!

The cord and handle were not included. I was thinking about using some extra cord from a set of blinds and making a handle.
The one way bearing is inside the engine block on the Megatech 16. the hex part that goes into the pull start is attached to a long round shaft that goes inside the engine block and into the bearing.
