For me, it's all about safety as well, and the safety of both parties involved. Where I live, we have a ton of super curvy two lane country roads that are full of blind corners. One of those roads in particular has a 55mph speed limit, and is a regular road for us on the motorcycles. I have no problem sharing the road with bicyclists at all, none. But, here's what I do have a problem with; when you're right in the middle of my lane doing 2mph going up hill and I come around a blind corner at the posted speed limit and almost take both of us out, then it becomes unsafe for both of us. Not only that, but some of them will have a chase vehicle, and they will hold up traffic for DAYS, and never pull over to let traffic by. Not to mention that if I'm stuck behind your chase car, and another car is behind me then I'm pinned between two 4,000lbs bricks if somebody comes around a blind curve and hits the car behind me. It's simple common sense really, that on a windy two lane you don't want to be in the middle of the road, and I say that from a bicyclists mentality. In the city, it is a totally different thing.
