Wow, I started one busy thread! For me it's people who poke around too much.. drive slow, or move slow in stores.. I want to get where I'm going and get the hell out. Get out of the holy moly way.. It's worse when they are bullshitting on their cell phone

when i see a bike in the road and there is a bike trail or sidewalk right next to them

OH i know! i realize we are supposed to "share the road" and all that other BS but duuuuuuuuude, there is NO other place to ride that thing than two feet into my lane? Really? c'mon now...

I changed my mind. I HATE people who show absolutely no respect to cyclists, even those (like myself) that stay on or to the right of the yellow line.

Sidewalks are for pedestrians and children. There is a reason they are called road bikes. Give us a little space and better yet grow up! Oh and before anybody starts whining about the riders that do happen to be far into the lane, check yourself... Do you really use your turn signals everytime your change lanes or pass a mailman? Not everybody is perfect, and from what I see out on the road.. there are far more poor drivers per capita than poor riders. So just shove it.

Side WHAT!?

I hate when people want me to ride on the killing field that is the sidewalk, so that I don't slow their ragemobile down for a few seconds. I hate the morons that insist on passing me as close as they possibly can, forcing me to ride my bicycle close to the middle of the lane, just so I can get safe passing distances.

The sidewalk is the best place to ride to get hit by cross traffic, and cars pulling in and out of driveways. Bicycles and pedestrians tend to a dangerous mix, as well. There's a reason it's not called a sideride.

I personally, would love to be able to ride farther right, but that's where I'm most likely to be buzzed. So, I move left until passing distance increases. My courtesy ends, when my safety is endangered. My own personal experience with this is that when I quit hugging the edge of the road to be nice, the number of cars buzzing me dangerously closely has dropped dramatically.

If you're really that bothered by a cyclist riding out in the lane, where he or she is safest, you can blame the drivers who've driven so dangerously around the cyclists, that they've had to adopt such an assertive lane positioning for their own safety. Calm down, and realize that they're not riding there to annoy you. Yes, there are some jerk ass cyclists out there, but many of those have been made that way by jerk ass motorists.

No bike paths around here, but from what I've heard from other cyclists, if the trail actually goes somewhere, (and many don't) they're only usable part of the time. The rest of the time they're clogged with pedestrians walking four abreast, and people with dogs on retractable leashes. Most "bike trails" have been made into multi user paths. This creates the old problem of mixing bicycles and pedestrians.

:( didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. I have some valid points, as well. :)

I drive a lifted Jeep Cherokee up mountain roads a lot to go trail driving. Because it is so modified and with 35 inch tires, it tends to wander a bit on the road. That's just how it is with just about any lifted truck. Not bad, but a little. When i turn a corner and suddenly there are cyclists three feet from my bumper I get nervous. On regular roads I don't mind so much. It's the mountain windies that get iffy in my opinion.

Hmmm.. maybe you should learn to better drive that truck that "wanders". If I can keep my bike within 8" of the edge of the road you can keep your truck 8 Ft. from me.

That's not a valid point, that's an excuse. You lose.

Well, if there were really eight feet between me and the cyclists there wouldn't be an issue. Eight feet I can handle; eight inches gets dicey man. I'm not trying to argue, i'm just bringing up a reality that happens. Also, some folks in the rice rockets just love to speed like hell up and down the windy roads. There is a fatal wreck just about every week on the one near me. You wouldn't catch me on a bike on that road, is all i'm saying. :)

I wasn't going to, but I have to comment on the cyclist thing. And keep in mind, I've been on both sides of the equation as I Mtn biked for years, a lot of that in downtown Houston inside the city, so I see both points. Also keep in mind that a few years back the town spent millions building a jogging / bike lane that encircles the entire town and is miles and miles long and is NOT open to motorized traffic of any kind.

For me, it's all about safety as well, and the safety of both parties involved. Where I live, we have a ton of super curvy two lane country roads that are full of blind corners. One of those roads in particular has a 55mph speed limit, and is a regular road for us on the motorcycles. I have no problem sharing the road with bicyclists at all, none. But, here's what I do have a problem with; when you're right in the middle of my lane doing 2mph going up hill and I come around a blind corner at the posted speed limit and almost take both of us out, then it becomes unsafe for both of us. Not only that, but some of them will have a chase vehicle, and they will hold up traffic for DAYS, and never pull over to let traffic by. Not to mention that if I'm stuck behind your chase car, and another car is behind me then I'm pinned between two 4,000lbs bricks if somebody comes around a blind curve and hits the car behind me. It's simple common sense really, that on a windy two lane you don't want to be in the middle of the road, and I say that from a bicyclists mentality. In the city, it is a totally different thing.

By the same token, I've encountered cyclists on the downhill side of some of the local twisties, and been perfectly content, no scratch that, thrilled with their pace. Matter of fact, I even (even though it's against the law for some stupid reason) cut the bike off and coasted down with a guy once in perfect quiet and solitude. I think the guy thought I was a bit looney when I killed the motor and tucked in behind him. :hehe:

What if, instead of a cyclist climbing at two miles an hour, it was a broken down car stopped in the lane? Just because it's the speed limit, doesn't mean it's safe. ;)

well, yes, but cars break and that cannot be helped, and it's foreseeable. knowingly risking your life to "stay in shape" is quite another thing to me. as i said, i'm not getting worked up, just discussing it from the "motorist" point of view.

i could choose to lift weights on crenshaw blvd in downtown los angeles instead of my garage, too; doesn't mean it's the smartest decision. :D

Skwerly nailed it. The car breaking down is beyond everyone's control, whereas the cyclist doing 2 is fully aware of what he's doing, and he's in control of his actions, it's a conscious decision. There will always be thing that are beyond our control, whether you're riding a bike, a motorcycle, or driving a car. And, just like Skwerly, I'm simply discussing it, that's all. Again, I'm all about the highest amount of safety for both of us, I don't want to get hurt, and I sure don't want to hurt anyone else and have to live with that.

I tried lifting weights once but gave it up because they were too heavy.

Yep, I learned quickly that the operative word in working out was work, so I got out.

People that don't understand how a 4 way stop works. I flip-off more people a few blocks from my house more than anywhere else.

stupidity is one of my things. if you don't know, then just effin say "i don't know" i will show you more respect with that than i will when you open your mouth and spew out words that don't even belong in the same sentence together.

another thing is when ppl try to tell me how to do something or how something works when i already know. for example, i am a certified cpu tech with certs in networking, b-voip. and i am explaining something to you and you tell me I'm wrong and go into some psycho babble about poop that's completely unrelated. not to mention you wanted me to fix your porn virus in the first place.

slow ppl in the fast lane.
"bumble bee" exhausts on import cars
the giant ass wings on the back of cars. really? your hatchback focus needs that down force to stay on the road? gimme a break your bucket looks like the pull back race cars i had as a kid.
ppl who think they are better than everyone else. your poop stinks just as bad if not worse than mine. give it up.
and do you really need to put the model name of your car across the top of your windshield? we can tell you drive a neon, no need to advertise it even more. you should be ashamed.

i think that's enough for now. I'm starting to take it out on the keyboard. lol. great thread.

Car or bike is irrelevant. The point I was making that was that if you can't get stopped in time to avoid hitting any obstruction in the road, then you are traveling too fast for the conditions. A cop could actually site you for it, speed limit or not.

Not everybody riding a bike on the road is doing it for exercise. Many are actually trying to get somewhere. Not counting the idiots who don't think the rules of the road apply to them, they aren't ones endangering their lives.

I will agree that the guys doing climbs, with their SAG wagons running block sound like complete jerks. There really does need to be courtesy from both sides. I'd gladly go back to my curb hugging ways, if it didn't mean I'd get passed dangerously close so often.

Olds..........you crack me up man! :hehe:

I work nights for a reason. I travel in the opposite direction of rush hour, I shop when the stores are least busy. This works for me and is probably in the best interest of everyone concerned.

I like people in general and make an effort to get along with everyone. But as I age, the level of stupidity in the world seems to be increasing as well.
