Car or bike is irrelevant. The point I was making that was that if you can't get stopped in time to avoid hitting any obstruction in the road, then you are traveling too fast for the conditions. A cop could actually site you for it, speed limit or not.
ACDA. Assured Clear Distance Ahead. In Ohio, if you rearend another motorist.. it's your fault. End of story. It doesn't matter that it's the middle of Jan., 10 below with black ice, and you were 30 yards back @ 25 mph. If you rearend someone, it's your fault.
The argument here is really not about safety or even common courtesy. It is a timeless argument that all boils down to one thing Americans have way too damn much of... entitlement.
Some drivers feel they are entitled to use the whole lane because they believe it is their road.
All cyclists believe they are entitled to share the road because the law says they are.
Now how both parties conduct themselves is not so clearly defined but I'll say this.. I dont' give two shits whether there is a sidewalk or not. I ride as far right as I physically can and I do not deserve to be given a mere 2 feet of room and honked at for being there. Anybody who thinks they have some sort of right to harass us for using the road can go $^&# themselves, or better yet.. allow me to Chuck Norris my Crank Brothers clip into your forehead. You drivers may not know what that means but if you give me the chance you may never make scrambled eggs again.
