Well tbh, fire code around here requires all hard wired in detectors so...
And those hard wired detectors, have a internal battery you cannot remove!

Yes, for multi level rentals here as well. We have a duplex rental a town over. I did hardwired on both levels and battery in the rooms.

Edit. The hardwired are on 3 levels. I forgot I did the basement also.

I'm pretty sure houses built before the code was put in place are grandfathered in. Since hardwiring for an entire existing house would be quite expensive.
